An oasis in the city of Pittsburgh. Even though there is a lot of concrete there is just enough green to transport you mentally. The views from this point, pun intended, of the city is beautiful to behold. There is enough people for you to strike up a conversation but it also has some hidden areas where you can be alone, if you so choose, to read a book, take power nap, or just people watch.
The park is well maintained and designed to provide a feast for the eye. It weaves the modern with the old seamlessly.
Point State Park is home to the Fort Pitt Museum. It was on this location that the first peace treaty between the American Indians and Government of the United States was signed. The Museum is administered by John Heinz History Center. The unique thing about Fort Pitt Museum is that it is both an indoor and outdoor museum. They also offers reenactments and hands on activities. Currently admission is no more than $8.00 for adults. School children pay about half and younger kids are free.
Although Point State Park is over 300 acres, people usually thinks that the area around the fountain is all there is, but this park also goes over the bridges to the North Shore.
Point State Park is the starting or ending point for the Great Allegheny Passage. You can jump on your bike and pedal all the way to Washington DC. Or complete your ride from DC with a wonderful view of the Ohio, Allegheny and the Monongahela ( known as The Mon) Rivers.
Facilities: There are adequate bathrooms close by the fountains and port-a-potties scattered throughout. There are also water fountains. No place to by food of any kind, however, Market Square is extremely close, very short walk where you're able to buy food. You're also able to buy food in the Cultural District which offers a variety of restaurants showing foods from different countries.
It is also the starting/ending point of the Great Allegheny Passage, if you ever need to ride/walk to Washington DC this is where you start or end.

Read moreThe only state park inside the city of Pittsburgh is both dramatic and inclusive. Point State Park is alive all day and into the night with joggers, bike riders, and skate boarders. Walkers abound, many with children and dogs. There's also a steady stream of tourists who come for the attractions. History buffs will enjoy the Fort Pitt Museum and the other historical buildings that remain on the site. Everyone will enjoy the views of the river and city. (See photos of the stadium by day and night). There are so many pictures of the fountain, it's hard to justify another one. However, I took a picture of one person standing at the fountain to give perspective to its height. I hope you like it. I also have a day and night picture of the Rt 279 underpass from the city side lawn to the great lawn. Impressive by day, its lighting at night creates a beacon, beckoning you to it. Very impressive. Try to allow some time when you come to the park. It's really nice to sit for a while on each side of the park to take in the river and city views. On a hot day, sit on the windward side of the fountain and you'll get a fine mist spray to cool you down. For events at this park visit: events dcnr pa For more information: pa parks and...
Read moreNormally I'd avoid places like this on the Fourth of July like the plague, but we had company visiting and the better half talked me into it. We got there early so we were on a low level of the parking garage. Short walk to the park, not very crowded at 5 PM. Found some shade and just relaxed until about 8 PM then moved into the open area of the park to see the fireworks. They didn't disappoint, they were phenomenal.
Now the negatives, otherwise it would have received 5 stars. There are permanent toilet facilities at the park, but for some reason it was decided to close them at 9 PM. So that left all 4 of us needing to use the facilities, with only portable toilets with long lines as the only option. We all gave up. Maybe the crowds were bigger than they expected but they didn't seem to have adequate numbers of toilets. The other negative was the bottleneck on the bridge under the highway bridge running through the park. There should be an alternate way of widening it by using the pool areas to the sides when there are big crowds.
The other complaint is related to the ridiculous lines to use the insufficient quantity of pay machines at the parking garage, but that's obviously nothing to do...
