I've been going to this place for years, often several times a week when I was living in Pittsburgh. I try to eat here whenever I'm in town. I'm a foodie with a diverse pallate, and I can say with confidence that Tamarind offers the best south Indian lunch buffet in Pittsbugh. The price is very reasonable. I have been to all three locations, and each is slightly different, with different chefs, specialties, and overall ambience. All three are very authentic and delicious. The Oakland location is my favorite. They offer a range of dishes, with good vegetarian selection. I believe the meat is Halal.
The weekend lunch buffets offer a slightly wider range of options, for a slightly higher price. Tilapia and goat are two typical offerings, served in different styles depending on the week, both of which I recommend. A dosa is included in the weekend price.
The dinner menu includes much standard North and south Indian fare. They specialize in dinner dosas, usually stuffed, and sometimes offer these at a reduced price. A single dosa meal is usually enough for a main course.
I have two criticisms. First, sometimes the buffet offerings are not consistently top-quality, but still quite tasty. Secondly, although not very spicy by Indian standards, an American or northern European palate may find many of the offerings a challenge. I would encourage such diners to confer with the friendly staff to help select dishes with an appropriate...
Read moreI wish to give zero star but it is not possible to do so. Such a worst experience. This is my second time visit to Tamarind first time in 2016 was a memorable one so was expecting nice buffet once again but turned out to be completely opposite. I don’t really understand how they can run the business without having minimal customer service skills. We reached restaurant around 2pm. Restaurant was closing at 3pm. I was requesting them to refill the items in the buffet, the guy was so damn interested in billing then the customer satisfaction. Seriously I raised this with him asking for please bother about the customers at the tables and he got into argument saying don’t raise your voice. He said we are having 100 customers no one had this issue and you guys argue only in Indian restaurant. Man American or rest other Indian restaurants knows how to take care of their customers unlike you. Senseless guy he was. Anyways I’m not gonna step in there never ever again! I haven’t seen one pro instead everything was cons. With a rude behavior he states I’m not gonna take your bill, man we are not here to have food for free. I was there expecting good buffet with good customer service which I couldn’t get and am sure no one else did. Not recommending...
Read moreVisited on Saturday after Thanksgiving with friends for a dinner party but now I really feel google soon opens a -ve star rating option, for restaurants like these.
I recommend anyone not to try this restaurant for following reasons.
they serve you based on your color I visited this place with my friends and the waiter asked us to wait in the seating at hallway, he had assigned a table for a local (non color) family who came after 10 minutes from our arrival
They never greet you or care about you They never ever bothered about giving us any update for our table and not even a smile
very average ambience and no designated parking For getting discriminated we had to park our car in almost next street, walk in the cold weather
4.Customer is never respected You wont even be respected as a human being here better avoid it.
There are many better restaurants in Pittsburgh than this, if you have time and plan for vegetarian meal goto Pittsburgh S V Temple and enjoy their meals for almost a nominal price and they never discriminate...
