Pittsburgh is our original home. We have been coming to this hotel since it had gold accents in the 80s. We were in town visiting family. We thought this would be the best place to lay our heads at night. We were right. Before I go into how incredible the staff is I will say I wish the rooms had Queen beds at least and not doubles. Fortunately two of us fit comfortably in the doubles. I do prefer more room so if you're the same make sure you get queens or a king. Now. From the valet who are friendly, and fast to the counter workers selling chips and waters you couldn't ask for a better staff. Having a staff like this usually means those at the top are the same. In the Wyndhams case this is beyond true. We were going about our business on a Sunday the day after a Steelers loss that we trudged to in freezing conditions. My wife, kids, and dog decided to go and grab some pizza. We already were given a late check out time as our flight was delayed until 11pm. We were dreading having to sit in the airport for hours but all of that was about to change. When my wife kids and golden retriever got back in the car they smelled smoke when she turned the key the car ignited. Like a scene out of Casino when they tried to off "Ace" within seconds the entire car was engulfed in flames sitting right on Brookline Blvd. Fortunately the kids acted quickly and got themselves and the dog out and then made sure their mom was safe as well. All were safe. Thank God. As I recieved the call I went into the mode of what can I do. After knowing for sure everyone was completely fine I went down to the front desk to let them know what happened. I asked for a manager. What I got was way more then I could've ever asked for. D'erricka greeted me. I told her what had happened. In the midst of telling her what was going on my son sent me a video. What I saw was horrifying. Firefighters, police and a car completely engulfed in flames 15 feet high. It hit me. My entire family was in that car just seconds before that. I started to get emotional. Derricka stepped in with her words and calm demeanor. She comforted me not as a hotel manager but as a compassionate human caring for another of her kind. It was an instant bond between me, her, my family and the hotel. She sprang into action bringing me back 2 room keys, and a checkout time written on the inside. I was blown away. Completely and utterly blown away. She first showed her compassionate side and now she showed me that customer service is beyond alive in well in downtown Pittsburgh, specifically here at the Wyndham Grand. The tow truck driver brought my family back shortly after. After seeing them and giving them all hugs I relayed the info of how D'erricka and the Wyndham were taking care of us. They were ecstatic after a traumatic experience. Not only did we have time to unwind and enjoy each other's company in the city for many more hours D'erricka also told us to give her a call if we needed anything else like something to eat or drink. At first we didn't want to take anything else as the kindness had been more than enough extending our stay beyond comprehension. As the day went on and the wave of adrenaline had gone we realized not much downtown was open nor was there anything around open that we wanted to uber to. We thought about doordash but remembered that we had been offered food and drink whenever we'd like. We called down to the front D'erricka called us back within minutes my wife went down and she gave us food and drink tickets. We weren't very hungry but we used those tickets on waters and Gatorade for the kids. I honestly can't say enough about how incredible this staff is. We will sing the praises of them to anyone who ever asks where to go or stay in Pittsburgh. Don't let this young lady or any of her staff slip through your fingers Wyndham because you have something great going for you at the pointe in downtown Pittsburgh. From the bottom of our hearts thank you so much. We will never forget how great you were to us in very trying time.
Sincerely, The...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreIf you value sleep, service and kindness when choosing a hotel please do yourself a favor and skip this one. I unfortunately stayed at this location for almost a week and was very displeased.
Sleeping - this was a very difficult task to conquer. The king size bed was fitted with small, almost square pillows that were incredibly stiff which resulted in neck pain the entire week. The doors/walls of this hotel are by far the thinnest I have ever experienced, I am completely serious when I say you can literally hear every word coming from the hotel rooms as you walk through the hallways and vice versa. I was awoken every morning by the housekeeping crew shouting back and forth at each other.
Maintenance - the toilet in my room backed up almost instantly and it took over an hour to have it fixed. I messaged the hotel operator Noreen who claimed they would send someone up. After 45 minutes, I tried calling the help desk but the line just kept ringing with no answer. After a few minutes, I hung up and tried again with no luck - I tried messaging Noreen again asking for a plunger so I could perform the job myself. Still with no response, I sat on the help desk line again and Noreen finally answered claiming she had seen my message before and was going to send someone up (it gave the impression she had been intentionally avoiding answering the help desk phone). Over an hour after my initial request, a plumber showed up and solved the issue within 5 seconds. (The hotel was less than 20% booked, this was not due to high demand this was Noreen forgetting to place the request.)
Cleanliness - while the room felt decently clean, there was plenty of grime on the showerhead along with poor upkeep of all wall/floor linings in the bathroom. There was also items left behind from previous guests such as a dried contact lens on the floor.
Staff - while the check-in staff was friendly, those operating the "ground stop" concession stand as well as Eddie the bartender left much to be desired. As previously mentioned, I stayed at the hotel for almost a week and I never saw the "ground stop" staff or Eddie smile even once. Eddie was very short, constantly complaining and even spoke poorly of the event group I was with. If someone is that miserable merely serving drinks and accepting tips, I'm not sure why they are still employed. Many members of our group had issues with this person and every time I visited the bar it was like pulling teeth to get even the smallest token of service from Eddie - not at all what you expect from someone working in hospitality.
Overall, there are plenty of other hotels just across the street from this location. If sleeping is an important aspect in choosing a hotel to stay at - this is not the location for you. If a high or even acceptable level of service is important to you, this is not the location for you. If having friendly staff and a bartender who doesn't make you feel like you're offending them with your presence is important to you - this is not the location for you. Please, don't make the same mistake I did, do yourself a favor and stay at one of the other nearby hotels. Wyndham Grand Pittsburgh was a huge...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreBy far one of the worst hotels I have ever stayed in. Me and my coworkers were there for a tattoo convention this past weekend and I was far from impressed. Avoid this place at all costs. First off, the hotel itself including the rooms was straight up DIRTY. Our shower head was absolutely caked in green lime scale. Not to mention, the showers have one door so it is half open spraying water everywhere and you have to reach over and get soaked in cold water to even turn the shower on! Paint and wallpaper chipping everywhere. There was mold in the corner of our bathroom, our bedsheets had crumbs in them, there were stains on the curtains (very obvious white and crusty stains), our towels were so old that they literally had holes in them, all the furniture was old and chipped and the room had a strange musty odor. My coworker had to switch rooms in the morning while getting ready for the convention because her thermostat and hot water both went out. Which is extremely inconvenient when you are trying to get ready for work. Everything was clearly old, dirty, outdated and poorly maintained. The lack of cleanliness went beyond the room, to the hallways and elevators. There were glasses and garbage sitting in the hallways for DAYS, and it looked like it had never been vacuumed. There were cigarette butts and trash in the elevators and sticky looking handprints all over the door. I passed trash cans on multiple occasions that were stacked beyond the top and spilling over. As far as customer service and convenience/comfort of the stay, that part was virtually nonexistent. The front desk was rude and unhelpful when it came to any question. The manager Michelle had a constant attitude and acted like everything was an inconvenience. They hold water bottles hostage at the front desk and call them ācomplimentaryā even though they will not bring them to your room (oh yeah, thereās NO vending in this hotel) and get annoyed when you go to the lobby to ask for a bottle. There is no real room service or food to get at night without having to leave the hotel. And they charge 25 cents at their little cafe for a CUP of water. Which by the way, is near impossible to get anything from there because the line is so long at all times and there is only one employee. Valet is another terrible āperkā of this hotel. Itās $43 per night, and just absolute chaos. Nothing is organized about it and the valet employees acted like it was an inconvenience to grab your car even though the hotel literally forces you to use their valet service. I would not go back to this hotel under ANY circumstances and I would urge anyone I know to never visit here. Any other artist who attended the convention that I spoke with about the hotel agreed that this place is HORRIBLE and they would never be back. I canāt think of a single positive aspect of the entire experience here. It was truly terrible in every way. For the amount of money I spent to stay there, I am extremely frustrated by how filthy and subpar this place is. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY. Go to a motel, youāll have a...
