The Main Street Melters – A Must-Stop in Placerville
Heading upHighway 50 on our anniversary and husband’s birthday celebrate and fishing trip along Highway 395, we stumbled upon this little gem in the heart of historic downtown Placerville. The Main Street Melters is a funky, welcoming sandwich shop right on the corner of Main Street—perfect for people-watching and soaking up the small-town charm from their great outdoor patio.
I ordered the Cali Club, which came wrapped in two hearty halves—plenty to save one for later. My husband had The Rancher, also a double meat sandwich, and it was so big they automatically wrapped half to-go. At $15.50, these are generous, high-quality sandwiches—and totally worth it. Don’t let the price throw you off—there are more affordable options on the menu, too.
What really stands out is the quality. Every ingredient tasted fresh—from the crisp produce to the local bread that was clearly just baked. They use Boar’s Head meats and cheeses, freshly sliced, and you can absolutely taste the difference. These aren’t your average deli sandwiches—they’re elevated, flavorful, and made with care.
They also offer tacos, fresh salads, and a rotating tap list since it doubles as a beer spot. The staff was friendly, service was quick, and the whole vibe was relaxed and welcoming.
We’ll definitely be back—next time, we’re grabbing a few sandwiches to take down to the river and share. If you’re passing through Placerville, make this your go-to lunch stop. You won’t be...
Read moreStop here about once a month on my way through Placerville. The sandwiches are good. A few days ago I was on my way up to Tahoe and was very hungry and on a time crunch because I had dogs in the car (running with ac on blast and another human in the car but still), so I decided to call it in for pickup and just eat on the fly. My first attempt at calling the line picked up and then was hung up. I called back and got answering service that instructed the caller to place an online order if they got that message during business hours. So I followed their instructions and made an online order, and I made the order early so it would be ready by the time I arrived. When we arrived they weren’t that busy, but the woman working the front had no food ready for me. She then proceeded to tell me they were getting too many calls so she turned the phone off (I must have been the last call because she picked up and hung up on me and I got the message right after). So I explained I made the order online and she proclaims “oh we don’t even check those”. Basic common sense, customer-oriented service would not have an outgoing message saying to make online orders for a system they don’t check. It’s such an inconvenience for customers. And it’s inexcusable in this day and age. Thankfully someone in the back came out and made my sandwich quickly but for gosh sakes don’t accept someone’s money and then have no intention of making the food. For the record it was a good...
Read moreSandwiches were good; nothing extraordinary and a bit soggy, but generous meat portions and good flavor overall. 2 sandwiches took ~15 minutes to make, which was a bit longer wait than expected.
Our drinks were room temperature, so hopefully their food fridge works better than the drink fridge.
Minus 1 star for overall dismissive service: we are out of towners and were treated accordingly
Minus 2 stars for sketchy business practices! After we purchased the sandwiches, I came back to get drinks (bottle of Gatorade and a water) as it was really hot and our cooler was not easily accessible. When I was checking out the cashier said that the drinks were $4 and asked me if I had any cash. Then looked at me, waved it off, took my card and said that "she'll complete the transaction for me". I thought it was odd and made a mental note to check my credit card statement. Sure enough: I was charged $8.64, so double the quoted price PLUS a tip? I disputed the transaction with my credit card and leaving a warning for other travelers: always check your receipts here, or try a more honest...
