I got into Portland late, starving and just wanted something casual, and easy, like a burger or pizza. I headed to the Old Port to explore options. Parking seems to always be difficult, even after the dinner rush on a Wednesday night. A bonus after driving around and around looking for a spot, was that it ended up being free, since meters are free after 6.
I think I smelled the food, before I found the place. There's great outdoor seating, but it was a hot, muggy night, so I opted to sit inside and enjoy the AC (and some Bob Ross on the T.V Lol ) Seating is at the bar.
Making a food selection was tough. EVERYTHING looked delicious. I settled on the Hawaiian Burger, with a grilled pineapple ring, bacon, tomato, onions and a teriyaki mayo.
Can I just say...the burger was a mix of beef & bacon, and there was more bacon on the burger itself. The contrast of sweet (pineapple) and savory was amazing. And the hot, crispy, crinkle cut fries ....best I've had in a very long time. You can get them seasoned with salt, or salt & vinegar. And although the vinegar option sounded great, I ended up getting them unseasoned and dipping into their special, secret ketchup. OMG...the first one is free, but then they charge for extra ketchup and I can see why!
The burger itself is so big and juicy, that it can get messy. It's served on a metal tray topped with paper. Using utensils was causing the paper to rip and get stuck in the food, so I asked for a plate. I got a weird look from the server/bartender, but she eventually brought me a salad bowl, saying as she handed to me, that they were not really meant for cutting. That was such a bizarre comment, as I imagine people do cut their salad in those bowls, and it was coated ceramic or something like it, and not dainty or fragile looking, but I felt admonished, like I was a difficult little kid....which I definitely am not. After that she never checked back in with me to see how everything was or if I needed a drink, until I was finished with every last drop.
In spite of that, the food was amazing, and I will definitely go back to try a few other things. Don't miss this place, if you're ever...
Read moreMy nephew and I go to different restaurants to taste review them since his Mom died last year. I found the BUTCHER BURGER in Bethel online. We decided to go and try it. The parking is extremely limited. Shared parking lot. One of the owners tried to help me find a space, but as we entered, others were leaving and kindly let me have their spot. Very small, but extremely busy restaurants/ bar. We found a table and waited for service. The bartender was our waiter and was extremely nice and attended to our needs. My nephew asked questions regarding special ordering due to his needs and was accommodated. He ordered a type of cheeseburger with bacon and it had a bacon jam sauce and the block sauce, that he asked not to have, and he end up adding some of the block sauce that he thought he wouldn't like after trying with the fries. I ordered the crispy haddock sandwich with Pico salsa and coleslaw. It was very flavorful. The only thing is, It just needed to NOT be cooked as long to be that dark and crispy. ( it was so busy there that I wonder if the oil was already to used and old that's why it was so dark and not light And crispy.) Otherwise, I would very much recommend BUTCHER BURGER to anyone in the area and or are visiting. I do find that the restaurants today have increased their prices, but losing the accommadating side of frieds and have to buy separately is a little too much and over priced. We give it...
