Honestly the hotel itself was fine, the problem was with the service. Iâve stayed in a few hotels since Covid hit, and my expectations are pretty reasonable. I donât mind that maid service doesnât come daily to refresh the room (I think I honestly prefer it) but the side effect of that is that people staying in the room will simply need to request the things usually provided by the maid service.
When I stayed in a normal room with two people, we were provided a single bar of soap, exactly 3 towels, and a single little bottle of shampoo, conditioner, and body lotion. Typically this would be no big deal, but three women staying in a hotel need at least six towels so we can dry our hair. (To reduce the need to have laundry done, we typically reuse our towels unless they get really dirty after a beach trip or long hike or something similar)
Anyway, I called the front desk and requested 2 more towels, as well as some more soap, shampoo and conditioner. First, I was interrogated as to why we needed extra towels. I quote: âthere are three registered persons in the room, why do you need 5 towels?â Personally I was taken off guard, but we explained that three women typically need a towel for their hair and body simultaneously. After continuing to push back, we finally got the towels maybe 30 mins later.
Now this, while unusual, is not why I am giving a two star review. The next morning, I called and requested 3 additional towels (we had come to the Hyatt from a camping trip and some of the towels were unusually messy so we needed a few more) and the soap, conditioner, and shampoo, since we did not get any when we requested them the night before. I called the front desk at about 8am. At 9am, we had no towels. I called back, and was told someone would be âright up.â At 10am we still had no towels, so I went to the front desk to ask in person. Once there, I expressed frustration about not being able to have such a simple request filled because we couldnât start our day until we had enough soap to shower.
I was told, âthe towels are in the dryer, but theyâll be up as soon as possible.â The next obvious question was âare there only like 5 towels at this Hyatt??? Why canât we just get other towels??? And even if I accept that for some reason I can only have those specific towels, why canât I at least have soap, conditioner, and shampoo in the meantime???â
Long story short, it took 2.5 hours, two phone calls, and a visit to the front desk to get the towels. And the kicker is that THEY FORGOT THE SOAP. So we just walked the halls until we found a lovely and helpful employee who gave us soap off her cart of supplies.
Truly a ridiculous saga for an incredibly simple request.
Also, the light in the bathroom was kind of broken and the toilet seat was half off so youâd slip a bit when youâd sat down. Which was irritating but honestly would not have...
Read moreWe booked one of the few remaining suites and were excited to spend a few days exploring Portland ME. It started out poorly with the valet parking asking over a billion questions without any offer of help on the bags. And they want to charge $45 per day.||Then it took forever to check in even though we were the only ones in line. When we finally got a suite, we were told that it was a corner suite with a bathtub. None of these promises turned out to be true. We got neither a bathtub or a corner suite but instead a suite overlooking huge air conditioning units, a parking lot, and a dumpster. ||The suite itself was a glorified motel room with a tiled entry and bathroom off to a side, a pitiful and barebones living area with a L-shaped couch and a bedroom. Even the suites at any Residence Inn would have been more luxurious and it was certainly not a US$881 a night suite. ||Nonetheless, it became quickly apparent that their air conditioning was not working as it was blowing hot air when set at 68 - 70 F. When I spoke to the supposed manager, he immediately advised that he could not move us anywhere and offered either to take $100 off the room or that we could leave. ||However, when we decided to leave and gave him back the keys at the reception, he reneged on his offer and insisted that he would charge us for 1 night. Not only did they gouge people on prices but now they want to take one night for a room that has air conditioning that does not WORK!||It doesn't matter what status you have on Hyatt either. I am a Globalist but it didn't make one iota of difference. They just don't care as they are a franchisee. So I have complained with Hyatt Customer Care and I will see how they handle this complaint and will dispute any charges with my credit card provider as we did not stay with Hyatt. ||All this to say that if you have any other choice, stay elsewhere in Portland. There are plenty of Marriotts and we ended up at the Residence Inn which was far more accommodating and friendly even though they were almost at capacity. This Hyatt Place's gouging practices and non-functioning rooms should be sufficient not to give them...
Read moreYou are paying for location and NOTHING ELSE! Crazy overpriced! $429-$600 a night is INSANE!! I can get a LUXURY hotel with a balcony, pool, and all types of great amenities in Atlanta and other cities for this price. The only thing this place has is walkability and friendly staff. The room had a view of Fore Street (CBD store, Adam and Eve store & a karaoke bar that kept us up) with bird poop on the windows. The beds were so soft that they killed our backs and we could barely sleep. They had the towels in the shower on a rack rather than under the sink or somewhere they would not get wet so we kept having to move them. There is no overhead lighting, so the room is dark when youâre trying to put on makeup. Valet parking is $45 a day and then by the time you tip them every time you take your car out, itâs a minimum of 55+ a day. Some days I only saw one valet guy working and there was a 15-20 minute wait for your car and the poor guy was running. On top of this crazy expensive stuff they want to charge you an additional $14 a day for a crappy breakfast, you would think that that would come included since nothing else seems to be included for $600 a night on weekends. We never went to breakfast, but somehow it was on our charges at the end so I had to go down and get that taken off. Apparently, they donât check too well when people go to breakfast you just can go down and give a random room number and they will add it on cause how else was breakfast in our room when we never went? Our housekeeper, Rebekah was amazing. She at least made our trip better. Andre the bartender was also great!! Like I said all the stuff that we encountered was super nice. Iâm just not impressed with the hotel in general for the price they charge. They should have a lot more amenities. This place should not really be worth more than $300 a night if I came back, I would definitely check different hotels. It looks a lot better online than it really is and we were told they are about to lose their bar area so it's going to get...
