This is a very spacious Coffee by Design. If you've been in Portland for a long time, you'll know that most of the coffee by designs have been small, cozy spots. This is more of a cozy large spacious one! Definitely not intimate in the main room but there is a separate seating area that I believe used to be for staff only which now they have opened up for customers. That's a nice spot if you prefer more quiet. Anyway, the coffee's always great as it is at every Coffee by Design. The customer service is always pretty good. They have lots of different types of seating , for example, you can sit at the bar where the baristas make their magic, or you can sit at a two top table, or you can sit and lounge at one of the tables that has leather cushion seats. They also have large glass windows into the roasting room (is that what it's called?) that can look through. It's my favorite coffee shop in Portland. And if you want to celebrate true Portland local business, go there. PS I am so so sad that I'm not able to bring my pup in with me anymore. I've always been appreciative of coffee by design, allowing well-behaved dogs to accompany their owners. I think it's because now they have some food items. I said bring back the dogs and the dog treat jar and get rid of the...
Read more[Updated - another update at the bottom] I'm sadly lowering my score. We drive to CBD every weekend and spend about $40 for two half gallons of cold brew. We earn reward points, but they won't let us use them on the half gallons. They say that it is for individual cups only. I don't get more rewards for buying expensive half gallons, so this policy doesn't make any sense. Unless they change this, we'll stop going there. We never get just one coffee and now we have $50 worth of rewards points that we won't use. Lame.
Coffee by Design has been my favorite coffee shop for decades. They've always hired great people to work for them. The coffee is amazing. It really feels like a neighborhood hangout. Every weekend I grab a couple of half gallons of cold brew to get me through the week. I will say that I miss the Baker's Bench pastries. Hope they consider bringing them back. If they do, I'll add a star for a six star review.
[Update 2] They converted my $40 to 4 "stars" which is a drastically lower value. I've been a customer since they opened and after talking with them, I'm done. I won't be back. There are plenty of other places...
Read moreCame here with the intention of picking up a bag of coffee couple days ago. When we went in we decided it would be a good idea to order a couple lattes. Mine was ever so slightly bitter but my friends was fine. I'm waiting for the CO2 in the beans to get out, so in a couple days I'll write about that. The shop was really nice to walk around in and I was impressed with how nice they made the shop despite the ugly concrete surroundings. Other than the Barista asking for a tip, the staff was nice. Will be going again once my current bag of coffee runs out!
After this review, we pick up coffee here as often as possible. I’ve gifted the coffee multiple times and it’s always received positive feedback by the gifted. I’ve bought 4 bags so far, all different roasts, and it always tastes excellent. The Nebilyer Valley roast is wonderful. And the fact that it’s washed in a local mill instead of Goroka, differentiates it from other farms of this region of Papau New Guinea. Brewed as a single out of our espresso machine it’s complex, light, and buttery. Definitely my favorite...
