I hate having a feeling that a restaurant took advantage of me. I have that feeling about this place more than at any other restaurant I’ve eaten at in a very long time. I am extremely disappointed in the order I received for takeout yesterday. Three lunch specials consisting of pork lo mein, sweet and sour chicken and beef with broccoli along with a pupu platter for two cost $75. The pupu platter alone was $31. The portion sizes were insulting! I mean seriously insulting! Each lunch special was $12.50 and it was the smallest portion I have received from any of the Chinese restaurants in the area. The lunch specials came with a choice of soup. I chose the wonton soup. It was so salt it could not be eaten. I have a tendency to like more salt than other people. If I say the soup was so salt it could not be eaten, it was bad. It was literally like containers of seawater with wontons submerged in it. The only flavor was salt. I think they used so much salt in the soup that they ran out to season anything else. The lo mein was blah and needed soy sauce added to give it any flavor. The sweet and sour chicken nothing special. I liked that they added pieces of pineapple, cherries and onions to it. You don’t see that very often anymore from other restaurants. That’s how I always remember it as a kid. The beef and broccoli was not terrible. I didn’t have to add any any seasoning to the but the portion size was so incredibly small. I’m very picky about egg rolls. I usually like them or hate them, depending on the restaurant. These had zero flavor so I couldn’t say if I liked them or not. I couldn’t understand how what I was eating had no flavor. Thankfully I had some duck sauce to dip it in. The BBQ spareribs were very thin and dry. Many pieces were like jerky. The beef teriyaki had good flavor but was tough and a small portion. The vegetable rice didn’t have much flavor and needed soy sauce added to be edible. The chicken wings were a close second to the soup as being the most disgusting part of the order. Absolutely no flavor. I don’t think they were marinated in anything. I did have travel time back home where the texture quality could have deteriorated but they were an absolute soggy mess like they had been cooked in the oven on low heat or fried in oil not hot enough. They were not good. I will never go back to this restaurant again and I suggest you stay away...
Read moreThis is one of those quintessential hidden gems. It's in a strip mall, adjacent to a coast guard recruiting center. The parking lot outside had two liquor bottles littering the ground. But once one goes inside, they're immediately in a place that clearly has a sense of pride. There are multiple fish tanks with beautiful fish. Art work adorns the walls and is very lovely. Everything is spotlessly clean.
This attention to detail extends to the food, which is ample, reasonably priced, and really seems to be on a different level than many other Chinese restaurants in the area. It was abundantly clear that sauces were made in-house from fresh ingredients. Aromatics, like ginger and garlic, had the kick that only happens when freshly sliced. Fried items didn't have any off flavors, telling me that the oil and fryers were in good shape. Anything that was fried or seared had a perfect crust, indicating the right temperature and not overcrowding. Lastly, the presentation of all items was beautiful. This place sweats the details and it shows.
This has become our favorite Chinese restaurant in the Portland area. That's not to say it's the only good one (there are plenty), but it offers the food quality of others without the fight to get a seat or price multiplier one pays in the city. It appears to be family run and the staff are lovely,...
Read moreI’m not someone who normally would write a review, but I honestly don’t think that the way I was treated here was in any way, okay. Walking in the door, there was a man at the counter who didn’t bother to say hello, and seemed to be bothered by the fact that we were there. He proceeded to walk away to a table without saying a single word. Okay, I thought, maybe he doesn’t talk much. Figuring that I should follow him to the table, I did. Figuring that someone would provide us with menus, I didn’t say anything about it; but after fifteen minutes of sitting and waiting, I asked a waiter for some. He rolled his eyes, and provided some menus. I asked if we could get some drinks, he said he didn’t have time to wait our table. Okay, I thought, so he’s busy, he’ll come back when he has time. Nope. When I asked him if we could order some drinks and appetizers, he said he didn’t have time to wait our table. My only question is, who does this? Who rolls their eyes at you and neglects you when you come to their restaurant? No human being should be treated this way, and I want to warn people that they won’t treat you with respect at all, they’ll threat you like you’re a bother. You can’t even get menus or anything to drink, let alone food. Don’t waste your time being treated by people who won’t even treat you like a...
