Well, this was an excellent find on a beautiful summer's afternoon. Driving down from Seattle I wanted to try another Portland Pizza place. Pizza Thief had brought up so I wanted to check out their Hot Tony -- a pepperoni pizza amped up by hot peppers. Being Korean, that was a spice challenge I couldn't ignore.
The thin crust pizza was extraordinarily flavorful and it delivered on the promise of heat. By the second slice I was in need of a drink and water and anything I could get my hands on. I'll be taking the rest home to my son so they can inhale the spice challenge.
But what I appreciate it so much was that every specialty pizza was available by the slice, which doesn't typically happen. It means that you can enjoy the tastiness of their specialty pizzas without having to buy a whole pie which runs from $33-$36.
They also had incredible baked goods including a glorious cannelloni bursting out of its shell with a very generous sprinkling of pistachio nuts. The price being just under seven dollars was inhibitive for me because my budget was $40, but I was able to pick up one of their amazing thumbprint cookies for $4. I say amazing because it was the size of my palm and more importantly the jam they used was preserves and the crust was made with some cornmeal giving it an incredible texture and bump in flavor. Highly recommend. Highly highly recommend. They also had some Baller looking chocolate chip cookies for $4.75.
Stay and have your pizza with a bottle of wine or some beer because they have an excellent selection. And next-door they have a bar that opens at 3 PM. It's a wonderful set up and if I wasn't trying to reduce my time in rush-hour traffic I would have stayed. I'll be back for sure. What a great place for excellent pizza. PS they also have a patio outside in case Covid concerns continue to haunt us.
One more note about Service, I saw one of the staff interact with surprise and delight when a presumably regular customer walked in. The customer was elderly and the friendly staff person was asking how she had been and that it had been a while as she inquired about her health and well-being. It's hard not to love the amazing neighborliness that came so naturally for the staff there. Thanks for being good humans and building community...

After my visit, I can confidently say that Pizza Thief lives up to its reputation. The crust was light yet crispy, with just the right amount of chew. The Wildwood (mushroom (with a twist) was iconic and I can’t getit out of my head! The Sausage and Onion offered a great combination and complimented the Wildwood perfectly. This is officially my favorite Pizza joint of all time! Great Craft Beers… Barley Breakfast Stout! Unbelievable Market Salad for a pizza shop! Whether you’re a pizza purist or looking for something new, this spot is a must-visit for any pizza lover in...
Read moreYanno. I used to send folks to Pizza Thief, but the past two times have been lacking and I’m not sure I can throw my support around all willy nilly like that anymore.
Last time my partner n I ordered the Wildwood to go and I’m not kidding when I say it was borderline tasteless. I’ve had the same pie before and it was everything I would hope a mushroom pizza to be. What happened?
This time we ordered a pepperoni pie and after 45minutes we were told it developed a hole and that they were working on a fresh pizza, and we’d get the damaged pie in addition to the new pizza. 20minutes later we were told the pizza actually didn’t have a hole and we were good to go.
Shame on me for not checking before we skedaddled but when we popped open the box at home it was pretty clear that the pizza did have a hole: the cheese had cooked through the dough and a third of the toppings were shifted into a pile toward the middle of the pie. I used to be a wood fired pizza cook and that kinda pizza damage happens when the dough sticks when making a turn and when you try to shake the pizza loose all that molten cheese and toppings floating on the top get shifted with that centrifugal force. Science. I don’t get what happened. I just. dunno. If I’m payin $30 for a pepperoni pizza, I want it to be pretty spot on and I don’t really want a runaround about it when it doesn’t turn out right.
Mistakes happen but this is two times in a row and this particular pizza enthusiast is p bummed. Flavor was at least good this...
