The atmosphere was mostly appreciated, it wasn't too loud despite being busy, most ramen places have crazy bright lighting so it was nice to be someplace a little dimmer.
The guy who took our order was kinda rude. I had one question about the menu and he cut me off, then briefly condescended to me trying to tell me what shoyu, miso, and shio arešlike dude you could've listened to the question rather than instantly assuming I don't know what miso is(the hell?) And not to encourage profiling or anything buuuut... Dude. I'm asian. And brought my own chopsticks. Cmon man.
However, the lady who actually brought our food was nice, and the good came out quickly.
The thing is... The food. They DO have some of the best textured wavy noodles I've had(thick, chewy, fresh)... And I wish I'd only ordered the plain noodles to take home. I have NO IDEA how it is that so many people on reddit were raving about this place. I got the shio MAYU(yes, I KNOW shio is the lightest of the tarƩ types), my partner got the miso. Both of them... Tasted like water. It was some of the thinnest, blandest ramen broth we've had. If you googled and then followed a basic recipe for miso soup, that would have been more flavorful.
Where was the shio tarƩ(lemon? vinegar?) where was the miso tarƩ? Where was the aroma oil? Where was the MAYU in my MAYU ramen? We took the rest of our food 'to go' so as not to be rude, then left still hungry and disappointed. Ya'll got your noodles down great, but you've got to figure out you tarƩ and aroma oil, ramen soup should...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreIāve been coming to this spot ever since Iāve discovered it. Having walked past it many times I never really knew about it until my partner pointed it out. The place itself doesnāt broadcast itself super loudly like some of the other restaurants in the neighborhood, truly giving this spot a āhole in the wallā feel and on the other side of that hole is an absolute gem of ramen!!
Iāve almost tried the entire menu in my entirety of coming here and itās all really satisfying! Itās made me a repeat customer! My go to lately is the shio corn butter ramen. The dish in itself is really great and you donāt necessarily need the extra stuff, I just love ordering extra (as shown in the pics) because Iām a glut! The ramen noodles themself have a good texture, width and flavor.
The staff is always friendly, occasionally you can hear the cooks laughing in the back - you can just tell this spot is a good vibe all-around not only for the customer but the font of house and back as well! Itās really inviting and itās a good time!
This review has been long overdue, especially for someone that frequents once to twice a month and has no complaints. If you want a spot thatās going to leave your tummy satisfied and your face smiling - This is the...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI absolutely LOVE Ramen Ryoma! As someone who works just up the street, this has become my go-to spot for lunch with friends and coworkers. The moment I step inside, I'm greeted by the cozy atmosphere and the mouthwatering aroma of rich, simmering broths and savory spices. Thereās always ample seating, making it the perfect place to unwind during a busy day.
The ramen here is consistently delicious, with each bowl bursting with the deep, umami flavors of traditional Japanese cuisine. The chashu is tender and flavorful, and the curry bowls are a must-try, offering a comforting blend of warmth and spice. The quality of the food is outstanding, especially considering how reasonably priced everything is.
Beyond the incredible food and inviting ambiance, the friendly staff truly set this place apart. They greet every guest with a warm smile, and Iāve never had to wait long for menus, waters, or my food, which always arrives hot and promptly. Even during busy times, the staff remains attentive and dedicated, ensuring that every customer receives top-notch service.
Ramen Ryoma has quickly become one of my favorite spots in downtown Portland, and I sincerely hope it stays around for years to come. Thank you for being a standout in...
