I cannot say enough good thing about Hemenway’s. I first visited here in 2013 and every single meal I have ever had here has always been first-rate. This is gracious white-tablecloth dining at its best, one of the finest restaurants in Providence. The staff is superb and well-trained. From the hosts and hostesses to the oyster shuckers, servers and waitresses, everyone on the staff is always friendly, polite and professional. I always look forward to my visits because the space is beautiful and open, the staff welcoming, the food and drink superb. Tonight, I was seated in the side front area, with views out to the adjacent park through the huge windows. The Christmas decorations were festive. Homemade warm soft rolls and sweet butter arrived immediately upon being seated. I began with a large bottle of Pellegrino ($6) and a classic cocktail, the Old Fashioned ($12). With dinner, I drank a delicious dry French Sancerre G-Pascal Jolivet ($14). My waitress Kira is a charming and attractive young lady. It always amazes me that women in their 20s can be so poised, professional and well-spoken, yet friendly and down-to-earth. Her polite attentiveness made my dinner even more special. I dearly love oysters and I stopped by the shucking station in the front of the restaurant on my way in to see what was available today. I began with three briny fresh Barnstable, Cape Cod oysters ($1.75 each), the largest of the day. I also had three good-size Cherrystones from RI ($1.75 each). Hemenway’s always serves oysters and clams with two sauces: mignonette as well as the classic red cocktail sauce. Next, another classic, the Wedge Salad ($8) with delicious blue cheese dressing & crumbled egg. Simple, fresh and well-prepared. I choose the Grilled Octopus Special ($34), served with sliced Andouille sausage, Brussels sprouts, small roasted potatoes and crispy small chunks of sunchokes in a beet vinaigrette. The octopus was grilled and slightly charred, but tender and delicious. All the other ingredients were roasted or grilled to perfection. I have had octopus and squid prepared many ways. I have never had this combination nor would I have ever imagined it. Executive Chef Max Peterson’s choice of ingredients was inspired!! This dish was superb and deeply satisfying. I always get excited when I have an excellent dinner. So, let’s keep going! I opted for the Lemon Pudding Cake ($9), a small 3-inch round dessert, garnished with sliced strawberries, orange zest, candied pistachios and a Grand Marnier tuile (I had to look it up. Tuile is a small French wafer-cookie.) Accompanied by a pot of French-press decaf coffee ($5.50). My total bill was $110.97 before tip.

I know you're reading this thinking a 3 for Hemenway's. And also the atmosphere a 2. If you sat in the seat we did, you would think the same thing. You have an absolutely stunning, beautiful restaurant with amazing ambience yet you have one seat in the entire house that sits in front of the bathrooms, the grill/cooking area door and see-through glass to a waitress station that makes it so 150 people cross by you during the time it takes you to eat a dinner, quickly. This changed the entire night for us. On our 15-year anniversary. A big one in todays throw-away world. This table spot caused us to eat as quickly as we could, get out of there, and enjoy ourselves elsewhere. This seat should have some type of column or block put up with a nice bouquet of flowers or some type of statue or something that blocks that area even more so that that doesn't happen to anyone else. I understand it's all about profits and maximizing the square footage of your restaurant, but not at the expense of somebody having to sit there and watch a 150 people RUN past you, while you're trying to eat. It ruined every bit of romantic opportunity of the night. Furthermore, we looked forward to being in this beautiful establishment all week. My wife chose it as her fifteen year anniversary restaurant choice. She was deeply saddened and wanted to make sure that I wrote a review in hopes that this didn't happen again. The food was good. Some menu items are better than others. It's not as amazing as I remember it. My paella was nothing special. My wife said her salmon was excellent. We got the hot appetizer appetizer, and the bacon wrapped scallops were the smallest they've ever been. The calamari was excellent, and the Quahogs were terrible. It tasted like they fried bacon and chaurice together and made as much grease as humanly possible and then threw them in the shell. Grease was running over the inside of the shell. Very odd. I've had better on the side of the road, in North Kingston. I hate having to write this as We were so excited to go ! Hope this helps another guest. You don't want the seat in front of the Oyster Bar sign.

We had a great dinner at Hemenway’s on our way to a Luke Combs concert at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, MA. This is an easy off and on from I95 from the northbound direction. We arrived in mid afternoon and parking options was plentiful. We made reservations and arrived at our designated time and we were promptly seated. Our waitress Danielle took very good care of us. The signature cocktails were very good with adventurous options. Our appetizer was local oysters which many at the table shared and they were delicious. We did a dozen with a mix of 4 types of Oysters with small, medium and large sizes. Next course included salads either Caesar Salad or Wedge. The Wedge Salad was superb and plentiful. We ordered a variety of delightful entrees that included Ribeye Steak, Stuffed Shrimp, Lemon Roasted Half Chicken, Lobster Tortellini, Fried Whole Belly Clams, Baked Stuff Lobster, and Grilled Kohlrabi for the vegetarian in the group. All of our entrees were excellent. If there were any negatives we could think of it was the fries were a little soggy and the vegetarian entree options were limited. Also the stuffed lobster seemed a little dry. At the end of our dining experience we were treated to sorbet as a dessert option that is not on the dessert menu and warm finger towels to clean our hands, delightful. Our consensus rating was 4.85 stars which is rounded up to 5 star.

I came to this restaurant 5 years ago during my first trip to Providence and I had fond memories of trying the paella and the mushrooms. I was able to make a last-minute reservation, and I'm glad I did -- the restaurant was absolutely packed on a Saturday night. It's a really lively, bustling atmosphere. The highlight from Hemenway's was the complimentary bread rolls -- super fresh, hot, chewy, pillowy bread that pairs perfectly with a soft creamy butter with flaky sea salt. I would come back just for this. Other food item reviews - Seafood paella ($32): Tender seafood. Rice was a bit too al dente for me, but otherwise tasty. - RI Mushrooms ($8): Good flavor, good variety of mushrooms. Would have preferred more crisp. - Steamed mussels ($16): Well cooked but didn't like the flavor that much (sweet onion flavor) - Raw shellfish platter ($72): The oysters were the best part. The clams were a bit fishy and the shrimp was a bit tough. I would just get oysters next time. - Strawberry basil margarita ($17): Tasted pretty watered down, wouldn't get again. I think I would choose different menu items next time, but I would come back for the bread rolls alone!

I had the opportunity of sharing an exquisite portrayal of food with my date last night at Hemenway's Restaurant. Our server was Matt and he was nothing less than exceptional. I certainly recommend him if you want to have an experience to match the food. He even brought out the bread crumber. 🤣 Anyways let’s talk about the food. The oysters were phenomenal. Now this is coming from a guy who’s not big on sea food. So for me to say that. You know it means something. I ordered the surf and turf. As well as the calamari and the lobster mac and cheese…Now obviously I didn’t finish all this food but I certainly made an effort to. The steak was cooked to my liking and lobster mac and cheese was probably some of the best I’ve ever had. They cooked it on top of the lobster which I think was an interesting touch. The only thing I wasn’t thoroughly impressed with was the calamari. But it wasn’t bad just not something that wowed me. This being my first experience at Hemenway’s I’m very excited to say this was extraordinary and I will definitely be going back. One of my new favorite restaurants.

Went for my anniversary dinner and everything from the food to service was amazing. I dont recall my waiters name but he was the best and made us feel comfortable. It can get a little louder due to the amount of people late night but nothing too bothersome. We started off with the calamari which I loved. Usually other places dredge their calamari in so much oil and you did not feel the oil from these being fried. Next for our entrees I got the 2 pound fisherman lobster while my husband had the paella. Both 100% recommended. My side was truffle fries and I loved them. If you are getting a side those are recommended. As for ending out night with dessert we had the crème brûlée to share as we were honestly so full from the appetizers and entree that shows they serve a good amount. It was honestly amazing not too sweet but just right. This is my second time visiting Hemenway’s and I truly recommend. Especially for date nights 🥰
