Absolutely the best seafood around! I had the pleasure of meeting a local gentleman who’s been in PTown since ‘87, and he insisted we try The Canteen. I was thrilled to snag a table for six in the cozy rounded corner with a huge window. The decor gives off a camp-like vibe, but don’t be fooled, the food is a culinary delight! The entire experience was fantastic, with a super sweet and engaging waitstaff. They even surprised me with a range of drink options, including alcohol, wine, and a delightful frosé. Since it was an evening in October, we decided to dine in, but I was told the deck out back offers incredible bay views - something to look forward to next time! The food was perfection - crispy, hot, with flaky and light fish. The oil used for frying is exceptionally light, leaving no noticeable fry taste. Impressive! Both my partner and I opted for the fish sandwich, and at $15, it was not only a generous portion but also a delicious choice. The side of pickles and onions was sweet and vinegary, making it the perfect complement to the meal. The best part is that you can come as you are; this dining experience is ideal for a post-beach meal. The constant flow of diners coming and going is a testament to the staff’s efficient operation. Bravo to the team! We’ll definitely be back. Peace out PTown! See you next year!

went with my bf and our friend we’re visiting for the weekend, and I had not been able to shut up about getting a lobster roll. the food and atmosphere were good and not too badly priced. I will say the large fries was much smaller than expected, but the only MAJOR issue we came across was with the bartender. my bf went and got me a Campari spritz and when he came back with it, we found 2 dead flies in it. so he took it back to get me another. the bartender was giving him such a hard time and complaining, when the issue is that the station he was making the drinks at seemed to be covered in flies that were attracted to the mixers and sweetness from the drinks. he made a second drink, which another fly went into, and then said “we’re wasting 2 good drinks” as if my bf is the one putting the damn flies in the drinks. he finally made a third drink and that was the end of it, AND tried to make my bf pay for it. that alone was enough to make me dock 2 whole stars. coming from NYC, we would never receive such poor drink service and such rudeness from someone.

Update: the restaurant seems to have found its way again! I went back several times this summer and I was happy to see that the food has improved significantly. They have a new menu where they kept some of the staples, such as Brussels sprouts and fish sandwiches, but also added a few, original, very tasty dishes. The lobster roll was simply spot on, all the seafood was fresh, accurately selected and cooked with care. Unfortunately, prices at The Canteen, just like for all the rest of the restaurants in Provincetown, are out of control and the service is taking a beating because people are starting to tip less. The town this year is definitely not as populated as in the past. The Canteen used to be an amazing place, but their standards have dropped big time this year, especially off season. The lobster rolls I had the last 3 times were chewy, served on a bread that tasted old. The clam chowder is significantly watered down and their fish and ships is now over fried and greasy. They simply don't care as much anymore. Pretty disappointing.
