One of the most notable restaurants that my husband and I dined at during our week in Puerto Rico! Yes, it seems to be somewhat catered toward the tourist crowd as you can watch and listen to all the different groups of people coming through and talking about where they hail from, but take that as it is.
The food was delicious - vegan options were limited to the veggie bowl, burger and fruit plate but all were great. No soggy or unripe fruits which is the standard at so many American restaurants. Super fresh and great flavors all around. Be sure to ask for their homemade hot sauce if you like things a little spicier!
Glad they offer a variety of plant-based milks for my matcha latté; husband had a simple espresso.
We sat outside to get fresh air and take in the surrounding area. We were well-shaded and met with a young local tortoiseshell cat roaming around. Our server was Omar - a spectacular young gentleman who was attentive and so engaging. Having traveled a good deal, he has the makings and mannerisms of a server who can thrive at an upscale restaurant environment anywhere in the world. As a local who was more fluent in English than most inner city folks (I grew up in New York City) and had the charisma and personality to take on bigger roles if he chose to. I think he would make an amazing director of tourism for the island so all the best to him!
Simple Foods made for a great lunch spot on the way to the ferry terminal from San Juan. Can’t speak for the other staff there but Omar was certainly the highlight (weird to say but he deserves the recognition). Would definitely recommend for any vegans traveling...

Read moreI found this place through Google Maps and I’m so happy I did.
It is a small place, but the food and atmosphere are great. As soon as I walked in I felt right at home. The music and the decorations took me back to my younger days in the island, and I loved it.
We got there a bit early (9:30-ish), so we went for breakfast. As far as the food goes, they have some traditional Puerto Rican dishes. And they also have some dishes that you would find in the states.
Everyone in my family ordered something different. So in essence, I got to try six different dishes. 😉 Everything was so good. I honestly can’t even come up with a critique.
For me, the “traditional” ham, egg, and cheese sandwich was the most memorable. I don’t think it was the best tasting out of all. But it was memorable because the first bite took me all the way back to my childhood. It was amazing.
One thing that we noticed is that they get quite busy. We were able to get a table right away. Again, it was around 9:30-ish. But at around 10, people started showing up. We were there about 2 hours and the entire time they had people coming around. And it was a mix of both locals and tourists. So it seems to be a hit with everyone.
I’ll definitely try to come back next time we’re back...
