The service at this location has really gone to the dogs in the last few months. Our last visit on 9-18-16 will be our last. We didn't even get to order our food because of the problems with the hostess. We felt like our food would be tampered with because of her, so we left. It started with a manager asking how many in our party, we had six. After not seeing him for ten minutes a hostess appeared from the back and started seating people as they walked in. After she had sat several parties we brought her attention that we were waiting to be seated. This seemed to confuse her, and she could not come up with an intelligent response. She continued to seat people as they walked in, like only a simpleton could do. Finally again after ten minutes we said in a more authoritative voice what is the deal. Keep in mind the restaurant was half full. She then took out six menus and sat us at a table that we could clearly see was empty for the last twenty minutes. Then she had the nerve to say "Jesus f-ing Christ" as she walked away loud enough for us to hear it. I understand that being a hostess is a job that only a simple person with no other options would do, but surely they could find someone with a little more intelligence than that. After a brief conversation with the manager on duty, we decided to spend our money elsewhere so as not to eat spit in food. He thanked us for sharing our experience with him.
I did contact OTB online, I got some lame email apologizing for the incident. The manager said he was going to send some gift cards, he didn't, not that I would go...
Read moreWe've been eating at the Rockwall, TX location regularly for over 5 years. The last few months we noticed a decline in the taste of the food. Yesterday, however, was the worst. To start, when we ordered our food we were told they now serve the rice and beans "family style", which was fine with us, until it was served. After our order was taken, we waited and waited, we were the only people in the entire section. After about 20 minutes a waitress brought me the ticket! I started looking for a manager because aside from the ridiculous wait time, getting the check first is so rude. Finally our waitress came by and when I asked for the manager and she saw the ticket holder in my hand she said there was a miscommunication of some sort. Then our food finally came out. It was TERRIBLE. As well as the "family style" rice and beans were inedible. It appeared the beans were shook from a can and left out. They had a dried out crust on the top. Also, had it been my family of 5, which has 3 men, instead of 5 girls, there's no way the tiny bowls would have served more than 2 of them.I was so over the entire experience that I paid the ticket, leaving a note on it and we left. It was such a waste of $80. We ended up leaving most of the food. We won't be back. There are too many other Mexican restaurants that are happy...
Read morePersonally, I hadn't eaten at On the Border in a long time; not since my mother's credit card information was stolen at one of the restaurants a decade ago.
My fiancé finally pushed me into going recently, and I am very glad that she did. The food was fantastic (I had the chilé relleno), the wait time wasn't too long, and the establishment was very clean. Prices were a bit on the high side, but that's becoming a common occurrence.
However, I would have to say the highlight of our experience was our server, Daniel. Daniel always arrived at our table exactly when we needed him. He brought us items we wanted without us even having to ask for them. Every time we got a refill, Daniel remembered the different amounts of ice we each requested. He was friendly, attentive, entertaining, and all-around fantastic. I have nothing to complain about and everything to praise; I would call Daniel the epitome of serving staff.
Thanks to the amazing work of Daniel, I feel that my opinion of On the Border has taken a complete 180° turn. I will be coming back at some point, and I will ask if I can get Daniel as our server again. Thank...
