I want to make it clear from the outset that I'm really glad Momo & Curry is here in Rowlett. We need more cuisine options than fried chicken on every corner. Our food boasted excellent flavor, was clearly freshly made, and decently portioned (I took some home, but we also split an appetizer so if we hadn't perhaps I would have finished my meal)... however, I hope an owner will consider changing their format to encourage a wider audience to give this place a try.
Indian cuisine is well known to be complex, it requires a ton of unique spices that are often toasted, freshly ground, and layered in the dishes at the right time for maximum flavor concentration (I cook a decent amount of Indian food at home, trust me I know it can take almost a whole day to prepare an Indian feast with all of the trimmings and freshly baked naan to boot). With that, it's also a cuisine type that stands up really well to being held hot for a couple hours because food in gravies are less prone to overcooking. This is why Indian buffets are so successful.
I wish Momo and Curry would conduct a case study of other restaurants that utilize a fast casual format (i.e. Curry Up Now, Masala Twist Express) because despite our food being fresh and flavorful, it took entirely too long to prepare for a lunch visit and it was honestly too expensive for the portion received. Comparing my $19 lamb pepper fry at Momo with not one, but two rice bowls I got at Masala Express for $9 each, I had leftovers for two more days from the latter and only one small meal from Momo's leftovers.
As far as ambience and atmosphere goes, this aspect of my feedback is highly specific to my situation but I need more fast casual restaurants to take my family to in Rowlett that are not fast food. As a working mother with three young boys all under the age of 5 who loves to cook, I am always trying to expose them to new foods, new flavors, and increase their tolerance for heavily spiced food. But my time is limited. As I said, I do cook Indian food at home but it is a chore. It is a labor of love. When I do I make a ton of it to have leftovers for my freezer. There are plenty of days around here that I just want to have the foods that I love and I don't want to spend a Sunday prepping them. I think I'd have trouble taking my kids here for a casual lunch or dinner. For lunch, the service was slow and the dining room was lovely in its decor, but formal. I'm just looking for a more approachable place to take them. Again, look at Masala Twist Express as an example of the kind of place that makes it easier to bring my entire family, be able to afford a variety of food that they can all try so even my picky 4 year old who won't eat super spicy food will still be able to enjoy something (case in point, he loved the samosas and the paneer and ate tons of rice). My 2 year old is more tolerant toward spicy food and would be able to share with me whatever I ordered at Momo, but due to the high prices I would only be able to order one dish per adult and we wouldn't be able to keep his attention long enough for the wait we endured to not cause a disruption for other diners. My newborn only gets my Indian spiced-infused breast milk for the time being, but even for him I'd like to give him a variety! Haha
So, all of this is to say: I am glad you're here Momo, but please consider a model that encourages your already fabulous variety, more affordability, and likelihood of non-Indian families exposing their kids to your wonderful food! And maybe a lunch buffet, as that would make it way more approachable who are new to Indian cuisine and "want a little bit of everything." For now, we will continue trekking to Sachse for Masala...
Read moreEDIT RESPONSE TO OWNER: I am very aware that the videos I posted are of the goat soup not the butter chicken curry, which is why each video is titled “$10 Goat soup with no Goat meat”. I did not post a picture of the butter chicken curry or the chicken biriyani that I also ordered. I am cultured and competent enough to know the difference in Indian cuisine and honestly do not appreciate being spoken to as if I don’t. Thank you, but I will not be returning to spend more money.
I really wanted to like this place but it fell short of pretty much everything Indian restaurant I’ve had in DFW. Their prices are on the higher side so I really expected better quality as far as their food. I ordered butter chicken which I kid you not had a total of 5 pieces of tiny chicken chunks in it with majority thinned out soupy curry, it was so thin, I’ve never seen curry so thin with no meat as if they are stretching their food to get the most profit.
I also ordered the goat soup which is really the reason I’m making this review. For $10 they literally gave me ALL thin unseasoned broth with NOT 1 piece of goat meat inside. It was literal bone broth with no meat, salt, seasoning, or flavor. I wanted to call to get my money back but they were closed by the time we arrived home and seen what they gave us.
I also ordered chicken biriyani and it was ALL RICE with 3-4 tiny cut up chicken chunks. They do not give you protein in any of their dishes which honestly feels wrong because of the amount they charge.
I was Very disappointed and sad to say, after paying $63 for all soup and rice, this is the one Indian restaurant that I will not be...
Read moreInconspicuous hidden gem. My first experience eating Indian Food. Couldn’t have picked a better place. I wasn’t expecting such an inviting atmosphere with cozy booths and tables. Great date night spot. I was surprised they served alcohol, but they had fully stocked bar with new Indian beers, wine and cocktails. We tried the Samosa Chat tapas to start. This was a fried “empanada” type dish, for lack of better terms. It was packed with delicious spices and served garnished with red onions and cilantro with Two sauces served on the side. One was a herbal cilantro and the other was a smoky chili barbecue vibe. The presentation was on point. It was Perfect Crispy bite with soft flavorful filling inside. Also tried the buttered chicken Mo-Mo. Stuff was crazy good. I know why they call it MoMo. Because you gonna want some mo! It was a Crispy dumpling served with a buttery flavorful brown sauce. Some of the best dumplings I’ve ever had. I’d like to try them without the sauce too. Also had the tandoori chicken served with jasmine rice and we ordered the garlic Naan. Crispy on the outside, soft in the middle and perfect for picking up the tandoori and rice. All were amazing dishes and very shareable for two people. I enjoyed the experience and look forward to coming...
