I hate to give such a poor review but I had a terrible experience at Pushkin's. My wife and I were super excited to try out this place and we had high expectations. We ordered a chocolate cookie, a scone and avocado toast with egg. I asked for no onions on my avocado toast. The cookie and scone came immediately, but sadly they were both dry and flavorless. We each took one bite and left the rest.
The toast took 50 minutes to arrive! The restaurant has an open kitchen and I could clearly see there was no sense of urgency in the kitchen and there was an overly relaxed atmosphere. That may be why it took 50 minutes to toast bread and cut avocado. To add insult to injury the toast came without egg but plenty of onions. I guess the waitress heard no eggs instead of no onions. We each took a bite of the toast and where not impressed. The bread was flavorless and hard and the lack of eggs really hurt the taste. On the positive there was a lot of avocado. However, considering the overall experience and our displeasure with the food we decided to call it quits at just one bite.
My wife was angry with the service and food and complained to a manager who gave us 10% off the meal. If I were the manager and had seen that we had literally taken three bites out of out entire meal that we waited almost an hour for, I would have just given the sad meal for free.
I was particularly annoyed by the fact that as we were leaving the waitress ran (yes ran!) out of the restaurant and chased us down to ask if we paid for the meal. I'm not surprised she did not notice us pay for our meal with the manager as she was hardly present throughout our 50 minute ordeal. Had she been this attentive from the beginning of our meal, instead of accusing us of stealing, perhaps our experience would have been better.
So we had a terrible time and won't be back but clearly this place does not need our business as it is always packed. Maybe it was just bad luck.
Final assessment: The good - Great decor, kid and pet friendly, nice patio.
The bad - food lacked flavor and texture, the service was poor, food took forever.
Cheers and good luck if you...
Read moreI want to start off by saying this place is the perfect place for me. Very safe and I never have to worry about cross contamination. I’m gluten intolerant and vegan due to intolerances of other foods and milk. I love this place with all my heart. But back in august on my birthday, I drove all the way to sacramento with my friends to eat there. That’s a 45 minute drive. I had only good experiences prior to this but this experience shattered my heart. We pull up and find a good parking spot. We’re all dressed up for my birthday. We walk in. It’s 45 minutes before closing and there were only 3 other customers there. The server told us they weren’t taking anymore customers. I started to cry on the spot. I even asked to make sure we didn’t come in when they closed early or something. They weren’t closing early. I try my best to be understanding since this is not only my favorite place to eat but I’ve also worked in food. We went back to our car feeling very defeated. I got incredibly lucky and found out there’s a pushkins in Roseville so we went there which was a blessing but I was deeply hurt by what had happened anyways. It’s really hard knowing that there’s very limited places to go and the one day a year you want to treat yourself you’re told they won’t take anymore customers despite it being 45 minutes before closing. I haven’t gone back to this location since then because I’m honestly still pretty heartbroken over this even though many people won’t see this as a big deal. It’s just hard because I don’t have anywhere else safe to eat that’s vegan and gluten free. We’re also pretty poor and had to use up gas to drive all the way there just to not be able to eat. I don’t know if this place takes reservations at all but I wasn’t sure what time we would be able to go because my friends had to get ready and I’m chronically ill so I’m never sure if I’ll wake up sicker than usual or not. I was really disappointed with this experience and I hope this isn’t a regular occurrence for other people because this had never happened to me before in the 10+ times I had been...
Read moreI am so happy that this place has opened up! Me and my boyfriend are always looking for great brunch places and this place is perfect!! They have a vegan menu, which I ordered 2 things from: the avocado toast with a tofu scramble and the coconut yogurt parfait (both pictured below) and my boyfriend got the regular non-vegan shakshuka.
First of all, the location and atmosphere of this place is very nice for brunch. The interior is sleek and bright and our waitress was great. She answered all the questions we had and brought us everything in a timely manner, even though it was super busy. I love the selection they have on the menu. They have typical brunch-y items along with sandwiches and salads, and a selection of items that come from their bakery on 29th street (also amazing). BTW everything is gluten free!!! I forgot about this aspect while eating, because the bread they used for the avocado toast was exquisite.
You can tell everything is high quality. Everything tastes fresh and organic, and still the prices are pretty decent. For 2 brunch main dishes, plus the yogurt parfait and a coffee, we paid around $30.
This place is a dream for gluten intolerant/vegan peeps! The vegan brunch menu has most of the main dishes, but changed to have a delicious plant-based alternative. I get frustrated going to restaurants that have plenty of variety on their main meat-centered entrees and have 1 measly vegetarian/vegan option which clearly had no thought put into it. It's so refreshing to walk into a restaurant that has a vegan menu where I can't make up my mind of what I want to get because there are so many interesting options!
Next time I want to try their vegan Benedict (apparently made with a portobello mushroom?), I will definitely be returning for many more amazing brunches!! Please give this place a try because it is vegan (me) and omnivore (my...
