Nice hotel, but has a LOT of room for improvement. I stayed here from 4/28/25 to 5/2/25 for a business conference and state legislator meetings with the California Association of Realtors (of which I'm a Director). Last year I stayed at the Hyatt next door, so I will make some comparisons to that hotel.
Pros: Rooms were nicely setup. I was on the 6th floor and had a nice view of the city and the Church. The gym is INSIDE the hotel, unlike the Hyatt where it's down the street. Much easier to go and grab a workout, especially at night since the streets are not safe. The gym is nice and seems to be at the "new standard" for hotel gyms. I personally got a kick out of the custom clock in the gym.
Cons: The staff was helpful but didn't know everything about the hotel, even the basics like parking. There are two parking structures on either side of the hotel... NONE OF THEM ALLOW HOTEL PARKING! The structure for this hotel is across the street. The also no longer own the structure and you DO NOT HAVE IN & OUT ACCESS!!!! When I asked the staff about parking access, they did not know this and it wasn't until I spoke with a manager that I got accurate information. Not only that, but the high quantity of homeless people on the street between the structure and the hotel, and not just homeless but ones yelling into the void and mentally ill and possible 5150, does not make for a safe walk to the hotel. Keep your belongings close to you! Be ready to defend yourself. Compare this to the Hyatt where the structure is attached to the hotel and you have direct access to it.
Now onto the room. The lamps had a layer of dust on them (hard to see how much in the photo). This was the lamp by the bed, so when you go to turn it on and off, you're getting your hand dirty. The bathroom shower had excellent water pressure and stayed hot the entire time, but the shampoo bottle was almost empty, the conditioner wasn't much better, and the body wash was the only bottle that was close to being full. I run short term rentals, this would be unacceptable for them.
The room does NOT have a refrigerator. It has what appears to be a cooler. It did a decent job cooling off my waters, but I wouldn't trust it with anything else. It really should have a proper fridge. The safe was also locked by the prior guest. Once I got down to the front desk, security was quick to come up and unlock it for me. It was empty.
The air conditioning in the room is poorly designed. It does not blow into the main part of the room, but onto a sitting shelf by the window. This makes it very ineffective at cooling off the room. It was only in the mid to upper 80s outside, but unless I kept the blackout drapes closed the room would not cool down.
Between this hotel and the Hyatt on J Street, I'd pick the Hyatt even though the gym is down the street and a...
Read moreUpdate: January 12, 2024 - I feel compelled to update my review after another recent stay at the Sheraton. Unfortunately, I have to downgrade my rating. I arrived around 930pm to stay for a work conference the next day. At check-in, I was informed that they were "over-booked". This is despite the fact that I made reservations weeks in advance. But, I was told not to worry and that my room would be ready in 20 minutes. Not a big deal, but I was tired. After 30 minutes passed, I was told the room was almost ready. Well, I won't belabor the point, but this went on until I finally was able to enter my room at 1130pm. Now, being exhausted after a 3.5 hour drive and needing to be at my conference the next morning by 0730, needless to say, I was very disappointed. Not only did my reservation not matter, I had to sit in the lobby for 2 hours waiting for a room. Sure, they tried to alleviate the situation by offering a $100 voucher to their bar, but I wasn't hungry nor did I want a drink. I was just tired. To top this off, they charged my corporate card $40.67 in addition to the room and parking charges. They are unable to tell me what they charge was for and I'm left with an unreconcilable charge to try to deal with. Finally, during my last stay (the original review below), my card was charged for personal parking AND valet parking. I didn't do both. When I called to get this rectified, I was promised the extra charge would be reversed quickly - It took three months. I don't understand how their bookkeeping can be so poor. I just hope it's not intentional. Because of these experiences, I will no longer stay at the Sheraton but will choose a nearby hotel.
I stayed one night at the Sheraton Grand in Sacramento for a work conference. The hotel is located adjacent to the SAFE Credit Union Convention Center.
What struck me first was the decent amount of temporary parking out front when checking in. You are able to self-park (if you want to go through the hassle) or allow the valet service to park your vehicle. The valet service was an easy transaction.
The check-in process was quick. The attendant wasn't too friendly but maybe he was having a bad day. The lobby area was very warm and comfortable. My room was located on the 8th floor. It had a king-sized bed, small refrigerator, desk area, and the usual other amenities. The hotel also provided two complimentary bottles of water. I will say that I found some hairs in the sink and tub, so a better cleaning process is recommended.
The view was decent with a large mural on another building and the hotel was quiet. I even enjoyed a nice piece of cheesecake in their onsite restaurant (after...
Read moreIn the years I've been a member of SPG and have managed to obtain and keep platinum status, I have never had such a terrible experience at a hotel. Prior to this, I have always held SPG in high regard and because of that, decided to book this property over others for my wedding that occurred in the area. Sadly I paid for this vs using points and completely regret it now as the price paid came nowhere near the value I feel I received here. The price dropping almost 1/3 from the time I booked to the week before was a horrible slap in the face as I was stuck with the more expense rate. I've stayed at so many other places and feel we overpaid at least 2-3x as much as I should have for the quality of the room and amenities received. If I had the chance, I would have avoided this place completely - of all the great things that happened during my wedding weekend, this was the one black-eye that came out of it. From the first night, we encountered serious cleanliness issues - our platinum upgraded room to "suite with two bathrooms" had dark stains on the bed sheets, stained towels, furniture issues, and uncleaned mirrors (the makeup mirror literally had gunk spattered all over them in one of the bathrooms - it looked like someone was popping pimples, etc and left it - completely disgusting). I called downstairs and luckily (?) got placed in the same type room on a different floor. This room also had issues (some outlets did not work, some lights did not work, furniture trouble) but definitely not as significant. Others staying with us in the hotel in different rooms (some club level, some not) noticed the same problems with cleanliness (stained sheets or towels) so this issue was not a local one, it was systemic within the property. Additionally, the "club" on the 26th floor had the smallest offering for breakfast, etc I've ever seen. Hardly "Grand" as the property's name calls out. The parking situation was a mess - our card kept getting rejected and the parking staff would have to come out and lecture us about the system... we also were charged more than we should have been for parking which lead to me having to go over that with the front desk no less than four times for them to realize that we were not charged correctly. All in all, I felt stuck here because I simply did not have the time or energy to bail and call SPG to complain - I had more important things to deal with (like my wedding). I still completely intend to reach out to corporate regarding this property as I (as well as others) feel we were left with a...
