My wife and I had Sunday lunch here today. It was reasonably priced for what the experience was ($8.99 per adult). There were plenty of food options available with almost all options being pretty good. I liked the tilapia filets, sushi, and coconut shrimp the most here. It seems like there was an adequate level of care put into serving the food. One thing that is unique about this buffet is that you can buy beer and it's pretty cheap ($1 for 10 oz). This buffet also has some rooms with TVs and different seating atmospheres. It seems like the service is better than some buffets as well. The waitress and hostess we had were both friendly and tended to our needs well.
I debated between 4 and 5 stars as there are still areas for improvement. Some of the areas not near the food and seating need to be attended to a little more (e.g. the windows need scrubbing, there was a broken light fixture out front, the decor was dated, and the painting appeared to be hastily done in some areas). Really, most of us go to a buffet to eat and not stare at the decor, so no big deal... we can all just drink a beer or two here and it won't matter. I also don't like the message requiring payment before eating sends the customer, but especially in the Saginaw area I can understand why some restaurants might do that. Paying before eating may also require you to determine tip before service is provided which doesn't make sense to me.
I feel Chen's is a little better than Teppanyaki at this point based upon most recent visits to both. Teppanyaki has better decor and facilities maintenance, but Teppanyaki has issues with letting food sit out too long. Chen's service is definitely friendlier and better. Teppanyaki's food presentation and choices are a little better. Chen's only has soft-serve ice cream rather than numerous ice cream choices at Teppanyaki, but hey - Chen's has cheap beer!
Overall, Chen's is a good experience. There are areas of improvement for Chen's, but I would suggest Chen's over Teppanyaki at this point - the care put into the food was a little better and consistent and the treatment from the staff was...

In my opinion this is a large volume chinese buffet in a very busy commercial area...(regional Mall across the street) they have a large cutomer base whether they hit your expectations or not. It has been proven to them that they don't have to give effort to stay in business or not. They know that if they don't satisfy you there will be a new customer coming is as your walking out the door. Good for them,.. maybe not so good for you.
I did glance around at my fellow patrons and they did look like they were enjoying things like they didn't mind or realize their options. I guess this is where the value of G-maps and or reviews come in.....another voice speaks....and maybe steers you to a more enjoyable choice...where Chen's falls down on casual glance is not doing the BASIC of cleaning and presentation and a simplistic "Welcoming" greating. I was another interupting client to the host that would prefer texting than seating me...no big deal...that can happen anywhere...but when you come in look around and notice the surfaces not wiped...smudge here...a smudge there. I find it particularly irritating when the table top is sticky and my fore arms stick to the table top or edge of table. To me that states a lot about their cleaning. Look down at the concrete as you walk in or walk out... It all adds up to things not done that most restaurants glagdly strive to do to thrive and stay open.
Saginaw has many many wonderful restaurant choices owned and operated by who want to satisfy you and to please you enough that you come back with your hard earned buck. The money you earn is clean....the restaurant that you eat at should be too. Please 👍 thumbs up if you found my...
Read moreThe manager or owner is absolutely rude. Have not been here in a few years, but I do not recognize the owner now. She comes across as a rich girl whose daddy bought a restaurant for her to operate and is absolutely cold and rude to paying customers. Came to buy a lunch buffet after work, friend was running late and it was 3:27 so I wanted to pay for both to get the deal. She huffed and said he had to be there to buy it himself, kind of took it personally like I insulted her. Whatevs, just paid for myself and went on my way. Friend came, paid but didn't get a receipt. All throughout my meal, I got to watch her take customers to their seats, which was about the hardest part of her job next to taking money. She would strut to the seats and back, not lifting a finger to help anyone else with a problem. Eventually, she came around and realized my friend didn't get a receipt and got really irate. She has no idea how to talk to people. Total spoiled brat. She must have looked on the camera and realized she was wrong but she never came back to apologize or anything. Maybe she just finished whatever Netflix show she was watching, lol. I liked the food here, but I'm not motivated to come back with this pig in charge. The last Chinese buffet to treat people like this in this town shut down. The people in charge had no customer service skills at all and people just stopped going there. Teppanyaki has improved, so I will probably just go there...
