What a quaint lovely little place! Clearly a renovated old house in an old neighborhood of St. Paul. It's walkable distance from United Hospital for anyone visiting someone there.
The wood furnishings, including the bar, raised table next to it, and the furniture in the adjoining dining room are all vintage old school and bring back memories of past times. Even the curved staircase out of the bar area feels like early 20th century or older.
The consumables are exactly as advertised. On the beer side, there are a nice variety of locally brewed unfiltered beers, all distinctly German or Austrian in character. It is easy to sample several by ordering a reasonably priced flight with three 5oz glasses of your choices. I tried the Wiener lager, the Bourbon Barrel Aged Dunkel, and the Scwarzbier Dunkel. All were very tasty, with the Wiener the lightest, the Bourbon Barrel more heavy, and the Schwarzbier the tangiest. If you like the fare in Munich or Vienna, you'll like them all.
The food side is also definitely German. There is a nice variety of German wursts and the expected German sides. I had a bratwurst that was very much like real German bratwurst, not the American Johsonville variety you find in the grocery store. Very tasty, with three very distinct dipping sauces. I leaned into carbs for my two sides with spaetzle and a duck fat fried baked potato. The spaetzle was OK but not spectacular, a little too thick and gooey for my taste. The potato, however, was very tasty, with a light glaze from the frying, and brought back memories of my trips to Germany.
The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. They truly made me feel right at home in this home type atmosphere.
If you're looking for the typical American comfort food brewpub, this is not the place for you. But for a truly authentic experience of true German beer and accompanying food, the Waldmann...

Nice place for beer in the beer garden or in the cozy Stube. They could sell more beer if they had a bar you could drink at before being seated, but it's a small historic place and more of a restaurant than bar. Food is good, but pricy and not very logically priced either (pretzel more expensive than the cheeseburger, wurst with two sides is $6 less than Spätzle+wurst..) Make sure to study the menu. I usually try to eat before I go. Not really authentic German at all (Currywurst without sauce, just a hotdog bun instead of Brötchen), but I guess in someone's eyes it is. I'm happy that they finally have a beer that they always on tab: the Pils. Parking is bad, but you probably shouldn't drink and drive anyways.. Last but not least: it's one of these places that add surcharges at the end. Since it is widely accepted, not a deal breaker at all, but I would prefer to have a menu that, you know, list goods and prices without having to do the math. In the end, they also add a liquor tax that I've never seen anywhere else. Since it is specified on the menu, it also makes me wonder if the wait staff, brewer and handyman also enjoy the generous benefits that the kitchen gets.. If you're German, you will understand my complaints. Swing by anyways, grab a beer and try to catch some German speaking regulars. If you're German speaking: feel free to say hi to any table that speaks German. It's common to mingle and make new friends in German bars& restaurants. Sharing a table is very common, especially in...
Read moreWe have been wanting to visit Waldman's for a while, especially to enjoy their beautiful patio, but didn't make it over before the Stay At Home order. Luckily, they are doing local delivery of food and crowlers! They have a delivery deal where if you buy three crowlers, you get a free pretzel. We couldn't chose three so ended up getting four! so far have only tried two, the Berliner and the Indian Pale Lager). Both were great-. The Berliner was a Wheat Sour and super unique. I definitely will have it again. I'm not into super hoppy beer, so only tried a sip of the IP Lager-- but my husband loved it. We are excited to try the others. The pretzel came with two types of mustard and an amazing curry sauce and fresh cheese curds. They were squeaky-- so you know that they are good. For food, I had the Berliner Mac and Cheese, which was great and filling. It had mustard and pretzel croutons, so a unique mac and cheese for sure! Would have again. My husband had the Pastrami sandwich and won't stop raving about it even though he ate it 24 hours ago. I had a bite and was jealous. The housemade pickles that came with the sandwich (which i snagged bc he hates pickles) were amazing. We definitely want to go in person once restaurants can safely open again and are planning to celebrate my birthday on the patio (fingers crossed that by the end of August things will be back up and running). Their delivery was super fast, the beer was still cold and ready to drink. Would 100% recommend delivery if you are within their delivery area (west 7th, summit-university, west saint paul). Thanks for the great...
