As a Vietnamese, I’m very happy we have a restaurant like China King here in St. Thomas. The food is so good and very authentic for Vietnamese dishes. They have Bún Bò Huế, Bánh Xèo (Vietnamese savory pancake), and roasted pork belly—not many places offer that, especially on the island.
A new Vietnamese owner took over last August, and since then, they released a full Vietnamese menu. The chef and owner are not shy—they show off real Vietnamese flavors. I respect that a lot. Many Vietnamese restaurants in places with small Vietnamese community, they change the taste to match the general population, so the food becomes more bland but they are not afraid to keep the full traditional Vietnamese menu, just like what you find in big city or at home.
You must try their Phở—it’s phononemal 😄. If you want something more bold, try the spicy soup Bún Bò Huế—very flavorful. Their Bánh Mì is also really good—my husband said he hasn’t had one this good in a long time.
The service is great too. The owner, Johnny, is always walking around, checking on tables, talking to everyone. We even told him we couldn’t find bean sprouts anywhere in St. Thomas—and he said they cultivate their own fresh bean sprouts in-house. What!! That’s so awesome 😄. They could just use shredded cabbage or something else, but you can really tell they care and put in the effort to keep the authentic Vietnamese menu. That’s dedication.
Also, try their Bánh Xèo and roasted pork belly—they are Vietnamese classic side dishes you don’t always see on every Vietnamese menu. So if you see it here, try it
As a Vietnamese, I can say these are the same flavors we would have at home in a Vietnamese household.
We think this is one of the best meals we had on the island for local food. I’m so glad St. Thomas now has a place like this. Good job, China King! A very good addition to the island! We will be back for sure… and do you guys do...
Read moreChina King you remind me of a mediocre date. My experiences with you didn't go badly but they were not that exciting either. You're either super busy because the cruise ships are in port or super dead because they're not here. I really love it when the cruise ships are not here because it's like private dining.
Your name also kind of confuses me, I say this because there is something here for everyone as they not only have Chinese food but lots of Japanese sushi, Japanese hibachi, Thai, and good old fried American food.
We've had their Mongolian and Kung Pao chicken as well as Szechuan beef with fried rice, they are 10% cheaper and tastier across the street at Great Wall restaurant. Their spicy garlic eggplant is decent, and unfortunately not served at Great Wall.
Don't be surprised, an automatic 15% gratuity will be tacked onto your bill. Service is very friendly, efficient and fast to justify the 15% but it's nice for customers to be able to determine what it is they would like to give.
I'll definitely be back to this place to give it another shot. There are not a lot of Asian restaurants on this island, let alone reasonably priced food options and I didn't have the opportunity the last two times I was here to try their...
Read moreWe just went to China King. What a rip-off. Prices are high for what they offer and provide. No specials, no happy hour. Would you like wifi? Sure, they have wifi, it will cost you $4 an hour at China King. Another thing was, it did smell like bleach inside. It is good that they are cleaning but not too pleasant when you sit inside and eat. It is written on the menu that 15% service (tip) is added, however, when we were leaving we were asked for a tip. I said it has been automatically added, the waiter said: "No, we don't charge locals". What a bull-s..t. we are not locals, we had resort bands on our wrists. He knew about it. I felt horrible. I would never go back. Stay away!!! There are many great and friendly places to go and...
