The Rum Hut — Restaurant in Saint Thomas

"Good luck! I hope the pizza is better than her attitude," a mother says to me as she exits the bar with her kid circa 7pm on a Thursday.

Surely the mother must be joking... But this is no joke. This is a warning.

Moments later, the bartender (a generous word for someone seemingly devoid of skills required for the profession.. We will call her 'Chungus') yells at an elderly man for speaking too quietly while ordering. He is then scolded for pointing instead of speaking, rendering him unable to order. She approaches me and my girlfriend, yells, throws her hands up in the air akin to a child denied candies at the grocery store. I almost called the Wambulance. Chungus wanted to leave (the Rum Hut or the planet, I am not sure), and she seemed determined to take patrons, young and old, with her. All this, I learned before my first sip of beer.

After sitting awkwardly for 20 more minutes at a quiet bar, I begrudgingly parted with the $5 I owed, and left.

Had I not experienced the obnoxious behavior from Chungus, I may have enjoyed the fun swing barseats and fair prices. Though I never did get to order that pizza, the aforementioned couple said it was good.

Horrible service, and this was on 5/14. The bartender didn’t see us for 5 minutes after we sat down, then when he came over to take our orders it was obvious he had been drinking because he was slurring his words. I ordered a drink and asked for a small, and he insisted i get a large size instead of a small. I told him I was driving myself and my wife home, otherwise I would order a large, and he then said “get a man size drink” 3 more times before I said no thanks dude, seriously. He then looked at my wife next to me who was looking up possible options for rental cars and said “get off your phone, what are you doing snapchatting?” I understand trying to make small talk and be cool but have some respect. Anna at the RumHut is an absolute gem! When our Viking cruise stopped nearby, we discovered the RumHut is now under new ownership, and Anna will be running it. Although they weren’t officially open yet, Anna welcomed us in with such warmth. She let us sit, chat, and even sample some of the incredible drinks she’ll be launching. Her passion for the RumHut and her creative ideas for the space are so exciting—I can’t wait to see what she does with it! She also recommended my new favorite sipping rum, Bumbu—clearly, she has great taste. It’s amazing to find such a fantastic spot so close to the port.
