This place is twice amazing! I'm not surprised it's a wait for seating. I think we will have to see about reservations looking ahead,! An anticipated 40-minute wait was barely 30 minutes, with the host being VERY diligent in speaking loud enough, and circulating somewhat to make sure the next in line (waiting outdoors fur seating) to be called would have a chance to respond. Though I had originally asked for outside seating, my better half realised we would get too cold and caught the host to change our request to indoors. We were called, seated, and offered a drink request while we waited for our server. I will use her name, because Erika was THE most attentive, helpful and engaging person I've encountered in some time as a server (I THINK that's the new PC term in this gender-free referencing era). The atmosphere at the restaurant has been grand (this was my second visit) both times with such a unique decor there is plenty to keep the eyes entertained (to include the patrons). If you like to sit and soak up life by watching people, this place won't disappoint. People were inspecting the floral arrangement, two or three were watching the sports near the bar before leaving the game to be ignored, families and couples elected to eat there. Overall, it does feel as if this place has earned a loyal customer base which contributes to its charm and personality, because of its ORIGINAL charm, personality, 💎💎💎💎💎 attention to detail and customer service. The place was absolutely superb, the breaded chicken and asparagus was delicious (and though the pasta looked like a box or cafeteria dish, he says it didn't taste horrible - taking more than ONE bite of an UNATTRACTIVE food is saying something when he's involved!), and the Key lime pie did things to my taste buds that I've never experienced before (I learned later, thanks to my love, that the jaw pain I felt was because the tartness was overstimulating my mouth, but it was absolutely delicious and I just had to have yet another bite, lol). Appearance of establishment:5 Customer service (all the way around):5 Menu variety and specials: 5 (they give you plenty of options, AND offered soup samples for tasting so we could make up our mind):5 Actual food ordered:5+ (especially the Key lime pie - if you like tart, you will enjoy the self-abuse...
Read moreOne of my family’s longtime favourite spots in the Sugarhouse area, the Dodo has an incredible selection of dishes and desserts that are all delectable.
This trip, I had the Herbed Chicken Pasta for my main course. The sauce was perfectly creamy and the ration of chicken/sauce/pasta was on point - it’s the worst when there isn’t enough chicken to compliment the pasta, but you will never run into that problem at The Dodo!
This entree came with a choice of soup or salad before the main meal and I selected their house salad. I do not know what they put on that salad, but I could eat bowls and bowls of it! The dressing is light with a hint of lemon and is perfectly tossed in the greens. The slivered almonds add the perfect amount of crunch.
Some other favourite menu items include the Smoked Turkey Sandwich, the Barbecue Beef Sandwich, the Chicken Enchiladas, and the Pulled Pork Quesadilla! And for the little ones, the Garlic Buttered Pasta is always a hit.
No dinner at The Dodo is complete without a slice of one of their house-made pies! A family favourite is the Banana Cream Cheese Pie - creamy, perfectly baked cheesecake in a graham pie crush, with banana pudding and sliced bananas piled high on top - a dollop of whipped cream is the cherry on top of this mouth watering monstrosity of a pie. (We visited on St. Patrick’s day, so our whipped cream was dyed green for a bit of festive flair!) The caramel sauce that they pair with the pie is warm and delicious and helps make the dessert the highlight of the meal. One slice can EASILY be shared with three people - two if you’re extra hungry 😉
If we visit The Dodo with a larger party and want to purchase another slice of pie, the Tollhouse Pie is another favourite. Cookie dough dreams are made of this!
If you haven’t stopped by The Dodo yet, then it’s an absolute must - especially if you live in the area! It’s incredible food, excellent service/waitstaff, and beautiful location should not be missed! My family has been enjoying this spot for decades and never fail to...
Read moreI have been wanting to try the Blueberry Halibut for awhile now. Went for a late lunch a few months ago and was informed they didn't serve it until the dinner service and would have to wait until 4pm, so I happily settled on a different entree. Tried again last Sunday. Called ahead to make sure it was available as we don't live close at all. Arrived at 405 and seated by 410. Order was taken quickly, salad and appetizer served. Informed close to 5pm they were “sold out” of the Blueberry Halibut. Asked for the other meal to be prepared to go. It was immediately brought out. Let the server know we had called and was told the Blueberry Halibut had been available, they had been serving it today, and had just barely run out. Not sure how, because it wasn't busy at all and we arrived right as the dinner service started and the only other occupied tables were the brunch crowd finishing up. Asked by the manager how the meal was. We informed him of our experience. He said in his 1.5 years they had never run out of anything and walked away (ok?) He came back maybe 5 minutes later while we were still waiting to pay our bill and offered a dessert to go, which we weren't very interested in. Looking back, we should have just canceled the remaining order, paid for the salads and appetizer and gone somewhere else altogether. I can understand the person who answered the phone possibly not knowing they were out, but the way the rest of this was handled was very disappointing. As much as the Blueberry Halibut sounds amazing, I don't think we will be trying again. It is not worth the 1.5-2 hour round-trip drive and then waiting 45 minutes after ordering before we were told the entrée we were most interested in trying was not available, especially as the restaurant was not busy and the other meal had been prepared before informing us of this. Very...
