Okay I have wanted to go here for a VERY long time. I have yet to try their buffet that they do for lunches, but believe you me, I will be trying it very soon if I have any say in the matter.
We actually used a restaurant dot come offer that I had gained from Rite Aid dollars spent or something like that. Anyways came here on a Friday night and I got something with delicious coconut milk. I always love Indian food because most of the menu contains stuff I can eat.
Why is that an unusual situation for me you ask? Because I (sadly) don't eat gluten or dairy. I also have some other weird food preferences at times, things that don't settle with me or I just don't like. Most of these include beef which I have ate a handful of times in the last decade and not gotten sick so that one might be okay. The other one is chicken which I got salmonella from chicken when I was two and almost died.
I think that is when the hatred of chicken (eating them, not chicken themselves) started. Even after being a pescatarian for a long time and trying to introduce chicken because I already ate fish and they say chicken and fish are SO similar, right? Ha, not exactly in my experience! I have never been able to eat chicken ladies and gentleman, without getting sick. Pretty sad story is right.
What does this have to do with the Kathmandu? You are right, we should get back to it. The service was great. It was crowded when we joined them for dinner here but we were able to get seated super fast to which I was grateful. The staff was exceptionally friendly and accommodating. We even brought a card game to play at the dinner table and no one asked any questions. This place was laid back and comfortable atmosphere. We went here for date night but it is honestly a great option for any kind of night, with any...
Read moreI was really excited to try this place. It had great reviews and is quite close to my house. We ordered a Lamb Tikka Masala, Saag Paneer, and Garlic Naan.
All I can say is wow. Up until now, the worst Indian food I've ever had has been pretty good, there are so many spices and flavors that even if it's not perfectly balanced, it is at least interesting. The Kathmandu lowered the bar to an hereto unknown depth.
The Saag Paneer and Lamb Tikka Masala were bland, bland, bland. They were nothing but cream. Saag Paneer shouldn't even have recognizable cream, but this one was 80% cream, with some spinach floating in it. Ever had canned creamed spinach? Then you've had Saag Paneer from The Kathmandu. The only difference is that the stuff from here also had about 4 giant chunks of hard, bland cheese (though I'm not sure it was cheese) swimming in the giant tub of cream (see photo). The Tikka masala was likewise cream, cream, cream, with no recognizable spices or flavor of any kind. It had 6 large, extremely tough pieces of lamb. Several were so tough, they were almost crunchy.
To put the finishing touches on our meal, the garlic naan we ordered (with extra garlic) came in a single piece, with hardly any garlic. They also included 2 pieces of plain naan. Why? Why not ask if we want garlic naan instead of the plain? Why only include one piece of Garlic Naan?
I don't know how this has such high ratings. I have a suspicion that the people of Utah are not very discerning when it comes to ethnic food, but perhaps that is going too far. If you like cream, and are afraid of too much flavor, then you should absolutely rate this place 5 stars. If you like Indian food, run as fast as you can to...
Read moreAmazing! I love curry, but, coming to Kathmandu was more than just good food. In fact the food was great. We had the bread basket, because even though I've had the pleasure of enjoying curry I've never had naan so I wanted to try multiple varrieties. The basket comes with 3 dipping sauces that complement each of the five types of naan in a different way. I love the sweet naan with the tamarind sauce, it was wonderful. But I can't decide on a favorite savory naan, not sure that's possible. I had the the Chicken Tikka Massala, I know this a tried and true safe choice, but also a pretty quick way to tell if I want to return for more. It more than passed the test. The Massala at Kathmandu is a perfect balance of flavor, and delightfully creamy. My husband had the Chef's Special Grill...so flavorful and each selection was perfectly tender and moist. And that's just the experience we had with the food, which is only part of the wonderful experience we had. From the moment we were seated until we left everyone was incredibly friendly. I feel as though every person we interacted with really care about the food as a part of whole experience so much that if you have a question someone is ready to help, but if you're falling in love with the food as they already have they leave you to your senses. I had the incredible experience of intuitive people sharing a part of what makes India so sensually unique and letting the food and environment speak for itself in a quiet confidence. I can't wait to go back. If you have the opportunity to dine here really stop and appreciate the whole environment. If you're trying Indian food for the first time this is definitely the place...
