Brickyard. What happened to your smoking section? I’d like to consider myself a regular. I come to The Brickyard Bar several times a month and have done so for the last few years. It’s always been “in the rotation” because you have one of the best outdoor patios AND you’ve always had a pretty decent smoking section. I’m referring to the area with the fire pit and cool mural wall. At one point, you had some black grated tables and chairs out there, and then more recently a few tables and a cafeteria style seating/table situation. I came in earlier today and was surprised to see the smoking section adorned with more tables and chairs like the other areas. I was initially stoked because I always wished there was better seating in the smoking section. After looking around for a minute, I noticed several new signs hung on the leaf decorated walls that read “Smoking Prohibited Unless In Designated Areas”. I was confused because those signs were now hanging in what used to be the smoking section. I looked around to see where this designated smoking section was and was sad to see that you moved that area to a little teeny tiny corner out of the way that allows for no more than 10 or so people to be crammed inside of. It felt like I was unwanted and had to be pushed out of the way - almost felt like “this section is for the undesirables”. The tables were dirty and had not been wiped down. The area as a whole felt cold and out of place, like it didn’t fit in with the rest of the establishment.
Now, let’s backtrack here a little bit for context. I’m a cigar smoker. I’m always the guy who comes in and smokes a cigar or two outside while I enjoy several beers and a meal. I’m the guy who basically looks like the bargain value version of Aquaman. I’ve been on crutches lately if that helps paint the picture. Now, I understand smoking sections are usually perceived as “areas for people who smoke cigarettes”, but I don’t really fit into that category. I’m not looking for a quick nicotine fix for 5 minutes before I head back inside. Cigar smoking is all about slowing down, relaxing, enjoying yourself, and appreciating the little things. Pairing it with a drink and a meal makes the experience that much more enjoyable. The Brickyard was one of the few places on an already very small list that was able to give me that experience. Now? I couldn’t see myself sitting in that tiny crammed area to enjoy a cigar. It’s not comfortable. The weather wasn’t great today so the rain pushed us to the outdoor covered section. Normally (when weather is good) we would’ve stayed for another drink or two, but because your new smoking section isn’t exactly meant for comfort, that wouldn’t have been the case today.
You’re going to do what you’re going to do. It’s your establishment after all. I’m just bummed that I won’t be able to enjoy a cigar with my meal there anymore. You may be thinking “Boo hoo, go cry about it somewhere else. You’re just one guy”, but I’ve seen plenty of other people come through who also smoke cigars and I’m sure they will equally be as bummed when they realize if they want to smoke a cigar and have a drink/meal, they’ll have to do it in a Harry Potter closet sized area. Not exactly a conducive environment for a good cigar session.
I don’t know what made you guys decide to make this change, but I hope you rethink the decision to sequester people like me in a tiny corner. Cigar smokers are probably a small demographic for you, but we still exist and it sucks I can’t do that there anymore. You’ve essentially put a stop to cigar smokers staying a while longer to order another drink or two. I don’t even want to be in that smoking area for 5 minutes, let alone several hours.
*To any other cigar smokers out there, check out Boomerangs in Millcreek. Their patio is amazing and they do not make you hide away in a little corner if you want to enjoy a cigar with your drink/meal. You have free rein of the whole patio to do that.
Regards,
“the bargain...

Read moreSuper disappointing experience at my most recent visit here on a Thursday evening. The “service” was atrocious, or better yet non existent. I have been here several times in the past and often bring friends from out of town here because it’s always been a laid back vibe and they have a patio. However my recent experience was nothing like my Previous experiences here. Asked if we could sit outside and the hostess advised we can sit wherever. My sister and I decided to sit on the back side patio as the people who walked in behind us decided to seat their party of 8 next to us on the covered patio so we moved to the further end to have some space (and there was tons of open tables) my sister and I were never greeted, given menus, given any type of service what so ever. I watched 4 different servers come out, several of them making direct eye contact and completely ignoring that we had not even been greated in addition watched these servers ignore us and tend to tables that had already been helped. In addition the party of 8 was greeted, given beverages, as well as got their food before any staff even acknowledged my sister and I. After about 35 minutes of waiting It was clear in order to get food and a drink (which is the reason we came to a bar that serves food..) I needed to go place my order at the bar. At that point the bartender did open a tab for our meal that we were dining in for. After about 15 minutes of myself ordering our food and 2 beers at the bar, a server finally brought out two cups of water, again didn't acknowledge we were completely ignored. I asked to close out and the “server” brings out a check and wants to run my card again that had been run at the bar? So I told the “server” we have an open tab at the bar and she proceeds to tell me she is aware of this and the billl has been tranfered in which my response was why are you running the card again then? No explanation given. Anyway it’s safe to say that was my final visit to Brickyard which is super sad because it’s very close, has a huge patio and the foods mediocre. I’m not sure if there was a change in management or what but whatever change has occurred here in my opinion has been a huge downgrade. Also was nice to enjoy my food while looking at a dirty bath mat being aired out on the patio where I was told I could dine at. By far the worst service I’ve experienced yet...
