I am Hispanic and Senior, my guest was a nice younger black lady. It was busy we pulled a bar chair from another part of the bar so we could sit together.. The female bartender said she wouldn't serve us because we moved the bar chair from down the bar. We said we would leave go next door to get food, but we did order a drink. The manager Frank came over asked what our deal was and we said we wanted dinner but the bartender said we couldn't because we moved the chair from other side of bar. He said "that's right, we have rules. I don't go into your home and move a chair...we have rules". I have been in the service industry for 40 years and I have never told a guest that we have rules and I can't serve you. The best thing to have done would have been to say what the rules were but still let me order since we didn't know. I had just convinced my friend to come to 54th Street because I said it was a great place to come we could eat and have a drink, and then to be embarrassed by this buffoon telling me that I can't be served because I pulled the chair to the bar so my friend and I could sit?!? Needless to say she will not be coming back to this particular location ever again. We engaged in some great conversation with a regular we were talking to who said that he has pulled a chair up to the bar many times and nobody ever said anything to him and he was served so... is it because she is black and I am old that we were singled out? Soooo disappointing!! Anyways the other manager who was on duty must have caught wind that was what was going on and came by to apologize and gave us a $10 certificate towards an appetizer and took care of our soups. So that was very nice. But this location is not very conducive for new people coming in that don't know the "rules" ...how stressful to go out to have a good time and not be in the know to follow the rules?...STRESSFUL... The only reason we stayed was the guy who was a regular who stayed to assure us that this was a good place and he kept us in conversation and we ended up being okay for being there. The tortilla soup and...
Read moreWe've been ordering delivery from the Culebra 54th Street Grill & Bar almost every Sunday evening for the past two years, and I have to say, this store knows how it's done!
First -- Food Quality. I've never known a restaurant to have such consistently good food for so long! Chicken is always juicy, tender, and seasoned right. We love the Lemon Pepper Dry Rubbed Chicken Tenders with fries. Hamburgers are thick and delicious, and all ingredients are high quality (never any green tomatoes, skimpy bacon, or onion rinds). Try the Pretzel Bun - you'll love it! Fries are always seasoned well, Onion Rings are crispy, Cheese Bites are amazing, and even their honey mustard is perfect! There are so many incredibly tasty options that we never grow tired of eating from here.
Second -- Order Accuracy. I can tell you that out of at least 50 orders over the past two years, we've only encountered two instances when our order wasn't correct. Once, a new cook didn't understand what dry rub wings were, so he put the dry rub on the wet wings. I called the store, and the manager instantly gave us a credit for our next order! The other time was likely the delivery driver's fault, who forgot to grab our two desserts. Other than those two isolated events, 54th Street has one of the best order accuracies I've ever seen. Great job, 54th!
Lastly -- Price. While the pricing is not as low as some other local chain restaurants, considering the quality and flavor you get, we think it's a steal! We spend between $50 and $ 75 for two, depending on whether we get desserts and how many appetizers we order. Adding our teenage son on occasion brings it to around $75-100. It's our joy to spend a little extra to have such delicious food delivered once a week.
I've never eaten at any other 54th Street other than this one at 1604/Culebra, but if they're anything like this one - it's a must stop for great food...
Read moreSummer house salad is a MUST order $6.5 or $4.5 as an entree add on and worth it! Pic is showing mine almost gone because it was so delicious salad came with strawberries apples pecans and a vinaigrette.
Happy hour menu after 9 pm has a lot of options. This is our first visit at this location and we ordered burgers, calamari and fried mushrooms . Burgers came with cheese, mayonnaise and pickles on an everything bun, yum!
Mushrooms are huge and come four to an order. They are stuffed with creamy sauce and have a horseradish dipping sauce. Love horseradish. The Jones maltsberger location stuffed their mushrooms with the horseradish sauce but this one just had the sour cream sauce.
Calamari was crispy and came with Marinara. I recommend the half and half tea with lemonade.
The restaurant was not crowded even the parking lot had a lot of cars. They have a lot of hanging decor from fake elephant heads to go carts.
Service was excellent, attentive and timely. Came around often and let us know when it was last call for orders. Which is very nice. I've been to restaurants that won't even serve desserts after the kitchen closes and they didn't let us know.
Negative - there was no hostess when we walked in and there were people waiting. I had to ask two different bartenders to track a hostess down to seat us as they were closing in an hour and we wanted our orders in. They closed some sections with available desired booths and we had to wait a little bit.
My suggestion if there's no one at the door track them down. They have plenty of workers but they have a "not my job" mindset and you have to interrupt and ask for help. Poor guy in front of us was probably waiting a while to...
