Every indication, from the website to the look of the space when you first walk in, is that this is an upscale and stylish environment, they even have a cool view of 281 and the Pearl. Such a promising location and unique menu, both completely wasted by Hook.
SERVICE: You have to stand in a line at the bar to get anything. Want to add something to your order? Need utensils? Want another drink? Same answer for all. I don't understand why any nice restaurant thinks this is a working concept, the customers are trying to run up a tab and you make it as inconvenient as possible. I see in the past, the owners have talked about creating a causal dining experience. Then why charge $15+ a plate, have a full bar, inhabit such an elegant space, and be right next to the Pearl? Heck, if you want to be fast casual, even Sea Island and Luby's won't say no if you ask a runner for an extra plate or a drink refill. Come to Hook and you will just leave flabbergasted and frustrated.
FOOD: So disappointing because the menu looked so promising. I went with a group and we basically ordered everything but the kitchen sink. Nothing had any flavor to it. No salt, no garlic, no spice. The grilled octopus tasted burnt, the salmon ceviche was bland, the fries had no salt, the fish batter was tasteless. The only dishes with flavor were the chicken fried rice and the carnitas bowl, the non-fish dishes. Not a good look for a restaurant called Hook.
ATMOSPHERE: I hope the ordering at the bar concept is done away with and the chef gets more acquainted with a spice rack, because we WANT to come back here. It's the perfect spot in what is sure to be a vibrant little area. The patio is nice, the drinks were pricy but great (you MUST get the frozen carajillo), the staff are friendly, the look is so cool. I would be sad to see this place go under so fast because it has so much potential, but it's not even close...
Read moreI visited this restaurant today and was excited it being my first time and it was a disaster. O was excited to eat some delicious food with my family but the service was disgusting. I was served by a waiter who honestly made me feel super uncomfortable with the service, the bartender had the drinks ready and he delivered them 20 minutes later. Then he forgot my son's drink until he delivered the food. I asked about the drink he said they didn't have what my son ordered but never gave them any other drink options. When we arrived we ordered chips with guacamole and he never delivered it to the table (just the chips and salsa). I asked about the guacamole and he said it would be right out (fail). After that I ordered more chips and the waiter rudely replied that I would have to pay extra. It seemed rude to me the way he said it as his customers and at no time did I ask the price. I wanted more chips and I knew I have to pay for them. I don't think they focus on serving the customer politely, they don't take the customers' orders seriously, the place only had like two other customers besides me, it seemed rude to me that they served them with such bad service. I asked the manager if she would change the waiter, she kindly did and also gave them a discount although I asked to pay the bill for what I had consumed but they insisted that I accept the discount. I accepted it because of my bad experience. When I received the bill, the rude waiter was charging me for another drink that I hadn’t ordered. I told the new waiter and he removed the drink from the bill. Check you bill prior to paying for additional items that could be charged that you did not order. Overall, the food and drinks were good but the service of this waiter was very unpleasant and unprofessional. I will not return to this costa pacífica nor...
Read moreWe stumbled upon this restaurant while on the hunt for unique dining experiences in San Antonio. We visited during the lunch rush on a Saturday and were immediately impressed with the location's newly renovated feel.
The interior of the restaurant was spacious, featuring plenty of tables and seating, while the exterior boasted a shared patio that looked to be the future home of more eateries.
Despite arriving during a busy period, we were greeted by a single bartender who took our orders and offered drinks. While I asked for a beer such as Dos Equis, Pacifico, or Modelo, none were available, so I settled for water. Although it was disappointing, I understood it was the restaurant's decision.
Our food arrived promptly, and while my wife's Carnita Cubano was delicious and light, my Fish n Chips was just okay. The fish filet was heavily battered, and the fries reminded me of those found at Freddy's burgers. Despite the plate's large appearance, the meal was not filling, and the $17 price point was average.
I tipped our server using the touch-pay method, only to discover that I was required to perform all other tasks, including getting my own water, utensils, and salt. If I had known this before tipping, I would have reconsidered.
My advice to the owners is that when a customer tips using the credit card machine, the server should acknowledge the tip, make eye contact, and offer a sincere thanks with a smile. Customers do not appreciate being nudged to tip when the server does not go above and beyond.
Overall, we found our experience at this restaurant disappointing and will not...
