After a two week visit to Europe we were craving Mexican food. Jet lag had me starving but unable to eat the texas sized portions this great state is known for, my daughter ready to eat all the foods. So we ordered a starter Elotes Botaneros (Four pieces of grilled corn on the cob covered in a tangy cream sauce and queso fresco.) And two main dishes a small bowl of Sopa de Tortilla (crisp corn tortilla chips, avocado, chipotle pepper and Muenster cheese) and Enchiladas Verdes (Three soft rolled corn tortillas filled with chicken guisada, tomatillo sauce, with red rice and refried beans.) We we’re served chips, salsa and refried beans, which I must say this is only the second restaurant I’ve been to that serves beans with the chips the other being in Arizona. The salsa was delicious. The Elotes were sour, I love a little lemon or lime on them but these were so sour they were almost inedible. I wouldn’t order a again. The soup was delicious, and presented beautifully, almost to be made to your taste, which could have been done with the Elotes by perhaps providing the lemom/lime to add as you wish. My daughter really enjoyed her Enchiladas and devoured the plate. My only other issue giving this restaurant a 4 instead of 5 star is we were seated at a table that was getting dripped on by the A/C, avoidable by scooching over a bit but there were other tables we could have been seated at. I would also say it’s a very pricy location, especially for lunch, but it is La Cantera. Other than that we had great service and a manager came to ask how it was and was very professional and polite. I mentioned the leak and he apologized profusely.

After seeing this place when we go shopping at La Cantera several times, decided today after church was our dinner date destination. My wife ordered the chilaquiles with beef rather than chicken and I ordered the Matamores beef tacos. Our waiter brought out some chips and salsa with another side of beans and chorizo.......The beans and chorizo are awesome! Our food came and was delicious. I actually liked the chilaquiles better than the tacos but the chilaquiles was ordered from the brunch menu so ordering later in the day might be difficult. The atmosphere was very enjoyable with live entertainment, that said it wasn't mariachis, there were singers playing guitar and not too loud either. You can hold a conversation without yelling. Now for the obvious answer to the question of whether or not I would recommend this place? Yes, I would be happy to entertain out of town friends here for an authentic style meal. I would also like to go here on a date night with my wife.

I went for happy hour recently. Domestic bottled beer is $3, import bottles and all draft beers are $4, margaritas are $5. You really can’t beat these prices for a place in La Cantera. You have to sit in the bar area to get the happy hour food and drink prices, so tell them you are there for that before they seat you. The bar area has plenty of table seating, so don’t think you have to literally sit at the bar. The place has a cool, upper scale vibe to it, but the service in the bar area was spotty. I had to search for my waiter several times for drink refills. My waiter changed mid shift for some reason, even though the original waiter was still working other tables. I’ve never seen this before. Right after happy hour was over, our check was brought to us without even asking if we were done. And before you ask, no, we weren’t being rowdy, but we were done eating and maybe he sensed that. I had the Papitas Endiabladas from the happy hour menu. Very flavorful tomato based diabla sauce, but be forewarned, it’s hot, hot, hotter than hell - seriously (and I like hot stuff)!! They really have a kick, I couldn’t even finish them. Chips, salsa, and refried beans were provided for free - unlimited chip refills but they never refilled the beans or salsa.

UPDATE: I edited the review from 1 to 4 stars. I filed a complaint and the restaurant sent a corrected order, with right meat and quantity. I appreciate that. ORIGINAL REVIEW I really try to avoid bad reviews, one bad experience every now and then should not put a business name thru the mud, but this is the third consecutive time this place disappoints. I attached a picture to show you what they call a $120 “Parrillada for 4”. I used a Starbucks cup as reference, its the midsize cup, the one they call “grande”. According to them, that qty of meat, 5 tortillas and the rest of what you see in the picture feeds 4 people. Just as a comparison, you pay a very similar bill at Texas Roadhouse for three 16 oz rybeyes with 2 sides each, 1/2 an order of ribs with sides and a kid’s plate of your choice, which feeds 5 very generously. And on top of everything, they send the wrong type of meat…… If you are craving for fajitas, I recommend you look somewhere else.

Summary: Delicious mexican food option in La Cantera but we won’t be back anytime soon. Food: Many items taste like they’re made in house (limonada, bean dip, tortillas, etc) Some plates are better than others... The sirloin taco plates are good plates, not impressed with the enchilada plate. Limited options for the kids (no kids quesadillas). Service: The food took a very long time (it was a Friday night) but the waiter didn’t come by to give updates at all. Second, we’re sitting outside in 95+ degree weather and we had to flag him down for drink refills. Additionally, there was a mistake in our order and we didn’t even let them set the plate down on the table. Guess what... Still charged for it! By that point, we were so done with the slow service that we paid for the plate we never ordered or touched. Note about outside seating: Mosquitos were horrible (June 2019). I was in shorts and even though fans were on, I received about 1/2 dozen bites!
