One and done. I cannot understand the high ratings. At all.
Cleanliness: Zero Stars. The place smells of rancid pork when you walk in. Old grocery store meat counters smell better. We ordered anyway and went to sit outside not wanting to smell of rancid pork the rest of the day. One of our two plates had several hairs in it. Not ONE, but SEVERAL. short black ones, long white ones. Gross. Too bad we got bites in before seeing it.
Food: One star. What we did eat was BLAND. Other commenters talk despairingly about how it must be cooked by white people. No, we white people also have better taste than this. This was made by people who don't care. A red sauce that had less seasoning than a can of tomato sauce was poured all over the food. ZERO spice. The only thing that was remotely good was the pickled onions, which are so out of place in this kind of food to begin with. Chilaquiles with FETA cheese? Why? Is queso fresco too normal?
Ambiance: We got our two plates (over $22 for JUST a torta and chilaquiles) served to us in cheap faux wicker baskets lined in plastic bags. Yes, plastic bags. Even the servers know the food is trash, so they're just getting it ready to tie off and toss out.
If you think I'm just a critical jerk, read my few other reviews. I reserve this kind of post for places that are drastically over-hyped and should not be in business the way they are operating at...
Read moreJust like the reveiw before us, we've had this place saved for a couple months now.
If we could eat with your eyes , this place is a visual feast of decor and food presentation. Visually the food looks great!
Unfortunately, the taste and texture of the tortas was underwhelming. The pork was underseasoned and dry. Bread to sauce ratio was mostly bread and not enough sauce to fully soften the torta. The tomato based sauce was muted of any deep flavors. This place did not remind me of the tortas from Guadalajara where I originate.
The cripsy taco had a slight advantage of being fried but same case in flavors.
The speed of service should have been a warning flag as to give it away that everything is pre-made. It smelled so clean you wouldn't think they cook in the building.
The gringa was very pretty but again the pastor meat was underwhelming, and the pineapple slices made it tolerable.
The guacamole and chips gave me this sensation that it was almost made from powdered avacados since they blend it into a perfect goop. No hand mashed gauc here, folks. (I made up powdered avacados to explain the space food consistency of the guac)
Thank y'all, but we will not be coming back

I am a skinny fella, have been my whole life, never able to gain a pound of muscle or fat in my life despite my best efforts. This place singlehandedly changed that. The "gringo" Al pastor tacos and the "Chilakillers" gained me roughly 15 pounds in those last few months and I regret nothing.
The unique flavor pallette of the gringo tacos with the orange sauce is actually like experiencing fireworks in your mouth. I highly recommend it if you're into genuinely flavorful spicy cuisine. It will make your nose run or make you cry if not prepared, but its not so hot that its painful and lingering, they somehow struck the perfect balance with the orange sauce. In my opinion they need to sell the sauce at HEB, I would buy It all.
Also the lovely staff have never done me wrong, always polite and fast! I once recieved a coupon book for being a repeat customer which was awesome! It introduced me to other locally owned restaurants! Simply amazing🎉
I now do my best to visit this location everyime I fly out of SAT as I have YET to find a place that is able to match its flavor in all...
