You can tell much about a Mexican restaurant just from the Spanish rice dish. It's good here.
By tradition, Mexican food is, yes, about the food, not the architecture, and not about the pictures on the wall. This restaurant has lots of easy parking, it is clean (with a single restroom) and Rosie the waitress is a top-notch, bilingual professional: quick, and attentive. She's back!
In spite of the great inflation affecting eating-out, this restaurant has managed to keep their prices reasonable and still provide fresh, substantial dishes and tacos.
Though most of the food is excellent and traditional Mexican, on hot days it can be uncomfortable to sit in the lobby. But one can order To-Go, and that remedies the problem. There's no better place nearby, overall, with such a varied Menu.
This is NOT a Fast Food restaurant, and the recipes ARE authentic Northern Mexican, so be ready to wait a bit. It isn't the typical quick but unsatisfactory attempts at Mexican cooking common in San Antonio, that can give Mexican food a bad name. Susana's knows what local people like
Mexican cooking is learned at home, not in some fancy chef school. The owners are 2nd-generation Mex. cooks (There's another Susana's further West, started by the previous generation.)
The background music is sometimes too loud, but it is upbeat. But it's no longer as severe.
The location is not on an expensive main avenue, so those savings in the rent are passed to the customers.
The lobby has just 8 medium to small tables, but the chairs are padded and comfortable. In Winter, the patio will seat more groups.
I wish I could give it a 5 star â rating, but it has been improving since the new restaurant owner started. The previous restaurant at this location had a bad aura, but modest Susana's deserves recognition. Now, you can't go...
