Wish I could give this eatery another star because it was a cozy, clean TexMex hole in the wall that has a lot of potential. The salsa and chips that were brought to our table were fresh and the salsa was flavorful with fresh tomatoes, chilies, onion, and cilantro. The two hot sauces that were for the main meal were both of the roasted varieties and not really hot enough for my liking. I had the lunch special (Texas plate ?) that included two cheese enchiladas, carne guisada, rice and beans, and a portion of what was supposed to be guacamole and two flour tortillas. My wife had the eggs and chorizo with potatoes and refried beans and corn tortillas. My lunch plate came with tea.
The cheese enchiladas were not bad, but not great either. They had sauce from the carne guisada over them and it just wasn’t a great match. Something about the sauce was just a bit off but the meat was tender. The beans could have been Ranch Style beans that had been smashed. Not typical refried pinto beans. The rice was mixed with carrots and corn. That distracted from the taste of the rice. The flour tortillas were warm and thank goodness the butter wasn’t “frozen” as is too often the case in some restaurants. My tea was a bit murky telling me it wasn’t very fresh. The guacamole was watery. That’s a no no. My wife simply said, “It didn’t have much taste,” but she was getting over some allergies and may have lost a bit of her taste ability. She had corn tortillas and it looked like they were greasy which is odd for corn tortillas. We may go back and try something different but will give...
Read moreGood reviews prompted me to try Taco-Tex, but my visit did not live up to my expectations. My first breakfast taco was chorizo y papas — "Papa Chorizo," my waitress responded, correcting me. It vaguely tasted of chorizo y papas, but it's a mashed potatoes version. To each his own, I guess, but the look isn't as appealing. The second taco was migas. It was acceptable but nothing special, and unfortunately I added a good amount of salsa verde, which was flavorless. The third was machacado. "With pico de gallo?" my waitress inquired. I thought she was referring to extra pico on top, not just the portion mixed into the eggs and machaca de res. When my taco arrived without any visible pico de gallo, I requested some. "It's already in there," my waitress said firmly and walked away. Yeah, it was in there, but it was overcooked and lacked the texture and bite that I was looking for. Three strikes. I did enjoy the roasted salsa. Its heat and flavor almost made the tacos palatable. But salsa isn't enough to get me to return. San Antonio has plenty of places where I can get great breakfast tacos — and servers who care, for that matter. Taco-Tex isn't...
Read moreIf, this place made their own tortillas they would get an easy 4 maybe 5 star. The tortilla are definately store bought and smell old. They are chewy and cause all the food to taste horrible. Unless your some white person who opens up your taco and eats the food separate and doesn't know how to eat a taco then, your probably ok. As, for the rest of us, your better off getting that new taco cabana off bitters. Even with canned beans those tortillas mask the flavor quite well. The empanadas are not that good either. They taste burnt.
I'm sure because there are a bunch of smelly white old people around this area, these people feel they can match their tortillas with their customers. Though, I am neither white nor, am I old. However, after work i could be smelly but, that doesn't matter because this place closes early as if to say we ripped off so many people that we dont need to stay open for dinner.
It makes me wonder how old those tortillas really are and how well is the food being takin care of or used the next day. Ewe, the more I think about it, the less I will ever...
