Yesterday I attempted to try this restaurant with my parents. A waitress with glasses took our drink order and was rude when we asked what they have to drink (drinks aren’t listed on the menu so idk what the deal was). She takes our drink order but never came back with drinks- 10 min later some man from the back asks if we had our drink order taken, we told him the other waitress took it and he leaves. The waitress then proceeds to take drink and food orders from people arriving after us! We wait some more and she served drinks for other tables. After waiting about 20 min for drinks we left. A common response from the owner is that they’re short staffed but it’s more about organization and they need to take care of that.
Today I attempted to try again with my dad and a waitress takes our drink orders but takes a very long time to give us our drinks. The food was ok. I’m not going to say it’s not authentic but I feel there are better places throughout the city. What seems to make people go crazy for are the cacerolas they serve the food on - which had a smell to them that I wasn’t fond of. Also they have four menus on Friday and Saturday which I find ridiculous as there was an item I couldn’t order because it was on the previous days lunch menu. It’s just confusing.
I ordered Mole enchiladas and it had too many sesame seeds. It was crunchy with every bite. The small portion of rice and beans were nothing to write home about … except for that the beans were too salty.
My dad ordered a torta but the meat had no flavor and had too many raw onions. The borracho beans were ok.
The total for a mole enchilada plate, torta plate, 2 cokes and a water bottle was $38.
There was a couple that arrived as we were midway through eating and by the time we were leaving they still hadn’t had drinks. It’s not a big place and there were three workers on the floor cleaning/servicing/taking orders but I think the problem is organization and lack of efficiency. I hope to come back but it won’t be any time soon.
Update now that owner has responded 4/24: my original review was two star but now that I’ve received that poor response from the owner it’s 1. I will gladly tell noone to come here and go to other establishments as it seems the owner doesn’t seem to take constructive criticism well. How rude! A review isn’t meant to be all sunshine and rainbows and I did say there are things that could be done better but the owners response is unacceptable. I understand there are growing pains but no need to be so rude. Also, I didn’t add this in the original review. There was a toddler going in and out from the kitchen to the back entrance from my visit on Saturday. Doesn’t seem safe or sanitary for a new business. There were open tables the, I’m assuming, family member could have sat at with the toddler. Take that...
Read moreWhere to start?! San Antonio is a Mecha for Mexican, Mexican-American and Mexican Fusion cuisine. While San Antonio ranks well above the sister Texas cities in Mexican influence, it also has its fair share of run-of-the-mill Mexican restaurants. While it’s common to find that most restaurants have one or two dishes that hold the place together, it’s quite rare to find a restaurant that is firing on all cylinders. San Taco has proven to be one those few that stands above the rest. Most will find that every restaurant should have an expectation of good customer service, good food, good environment and fair prices. While we often are willing to be flexible with one or more of these aspects when one or more are exceptional, it is not often that we find a restaurant firing on all cylinders. We’ll look no more. San Taco’s customer service, prices and food are beyond exceptional. Andrea was our waitress and she was patient, attentive and very knowledgeable of the menu. All of her recommendations were amazing and I can count on one hand the amount of times that I had to refuse refill service for coffee, chips or drinks. I am happy to say, this was one! Job well done Andrea. If there was an aspect for slight improvement, it would be the environment. While not a fault of their own, the restaurant lies near downtown San Antonio which can often have passing eye sores, poor roads and the occasional pan handler. In saying that. A walk into San Tacos takes you into a clean and heartwarming Mexican Cantina that will make anyone feel welcome.
All in all: Food: 10/10 Customer Service: 10/10 Price: 10/10 Environment:...
Read moreI used to love this place when it was San Taco, but it has drastically declined since changing to La Milpa. This shift happened this month (July 2025) and the food quality is awful. San Taco offered free chips and salsa when you sat like nearly all Mexican restaurants in San Antonio. La Milpa charges $3 for chips and salsa (don’t know if that includes refills). I ordered the Fideo Loco which was my favorite dish from before the change. They even had the sign for it up. Then they said they didn’t actually have it. Okay, ordered a tostada for the same price. It hardly had any beans on it, but was covered with lettuce and crema. Hardly any flavor. The tostada itself seemed cheap and ready to crumble. My husband ordered the torta de asada but they didn’t have asada so he had to get the pastor. The pork wasn’t well marinated. The sauce on the outside tasted great but it was clear it didn’t permeate the pork. With the torta came charro beans and they were undercooked (kind of hard on the inside) and like the meat or broth used had possible just gone bad. The 2 stars granted is literally because the Cafe de Olla is probably the best I have ever had, and the waitress was the sweetest. It was clear she was sorry the options on the signs and the menu were not available and I appreciated her attentiveness. Without those 2 things this would be zero stars. Don’t believe the older reviews. They are all from San Taco, not La Milpa. That is clear now that they serve food on prison trays instead of the clay plates and bowls they used to serve on. Cheap and sad now. Will not be...
