My family came to visit after I saw this restaurant covered on local news. We came on a Saturday late afternoon, a little before the dinner rush started. We ordered Da Slappah, a couple plain cheeseburgers, drinks, and the appetizer platter.
The Good: The marinara sauce was very chunky, which was a bit difficult to dip in but it tastes great. I got some pico de gallo on the side, it was chunky and tasted fresh. The burger buns are Hawaiian roll style, which is subtly sweet and has a nice texture. Da Slappah is a smash burger and has great taste.
The Bad: While the burgers tasted great, beware they are very greasy. The fried mushrooms are very watery/juicy. It explodes in your mouth. Unpleasant experience/taste for me. The dining area gets frustrating to maneuver once it starts to fill up. Easy to bump into other people and depending on how people position their chairs, easily a safety hazard. The dining tables had no sauce, napkins, etc. If you need any of these, you have to get them from the front of the restaurant and bring them back. They have no fountain drinks. Everything is bottled and you take one from a glass fridge/cooler. Our order was not accurate. I asked for a double patty and I was given a single, and we were charged for an extra drink when we should've only had 4. An employee drops off food at your table but you have to clear your table yourself, and no one came by to ask us (or other customers in the dining area) how we like our food or if we needed any help. The front of house / service workers appear to be slightly under-staffed. My husband waited in line for several minutes twice to get help with things that were missing or to get paper towels because our toddler spilled her drink. I'd love to see one extra person available to assist customers. We were feeling a bit neglected. The women's restroom needs repair. The plastic front cover for the toilet paper holder was broken and laying on the floor, and the TP could easily fall out, so you have to hold onto the roll which isn't hygienic between uses with different patrons. Their payment kiosk solicits a tip at time of payment, which is before you get your food. I generally disagree with this practice as we haven't received service to be able to base this tip off of, but we tipped anyway. The lack of service was disappointing.
Overall, while the burgers tasted good, there are too many problems for either my husband or I to be interested in giving Unko Maui's...

Here is our review of this spot:
They wouldn't sell patties à la carte, so we had to buy a whole burger instead, which was pricier than expected. With taxes and a tip, it was well over $11 for two small patties. For comparison, Wendy's sells its patties for $1.50 and Jack in the Box sells theirs for $2.25 each—both of which are bigger than these.
The patties on the OG Burger (6.5/10) were small and too expensive. The combo did come with fries and a "drink," which I'll get back to shortly.
The Queso Burger (7/10) was plain Jane; there was no "wow" factor.
The Big Kahuna (6.5/10) was just okay. The bun was very soft, but the patties were salty. The vegetables were low quality (6/10). Although the burger had three patties, it wasn't very big.
The Fries (6/10) were small and mediocre. They weren't crispy like fries from other places.
The Fried Mushrooms (5/10) looked pre-made, and the breading was meh. The mushrooms inside weren't bad, but at over $9, they were definitely not worth it. The Ranch Dressing (5/10) was plain.
For drinks, they had Pepsi products as well as Stubborn Soda. The drinks (7/10) and ice (8/10) were fine.
Since it was our first time and we were looking at a busy menu, we got confused and accidentally ordered two additional drinks instead of just one with our combo. I asked an employee if the combo came with a drink, explaining that we had paid for three drinks when we only needed two. He replied twice, "You can grab your third drink on your way out."
I responded, "Aren't these drinks free refills?"
He replied, "Yes." I'll just leave it at that.
Ultimately, we overpaid for patties, an extra drink, and a tip for a self-serve restaurant. This spot is a "one and done" for us; we truly prefer to eat at better...
Read moreMy wife and I are burgerholics so are always looking for the next awesome burger in our great city. I waited almost a month to post my review bc I wanted to give the new local restaurant a chance with new customers, but unfortunately, it was a flop of an experience. Service: I called in my order of 2 bacon cheeseburgers with tots for pickup. The woman that answered had issues taking my order but repeated it back to me and we got it right. When I arrived, only one meal was made. She didn't apologize for the error and just created a 2nd order. I was the only one there but it still took about 10 minutes to prepare. I reminded her that the meal came with a drink and she pointed at a fridge with can sodas. Atmosphere: the building needs alot of love and a deep cleaning. I glanced into the kitchen and it looked clean and organized. The inside dining area had basic black chairs and covered tables. No decor on the walls or tables. The outside area was more festive and had colorful tables and chairs. Food: To begin with, the tots were horrible. The dark almost orange color indicated that they were overcooked or cooked in old or dirty oil. They tasted like overused frying oil, nothing fresh or crisp. The burger was a hot mess. The bun felt gritty and had black specks on it, like the grill was dirty. It was soft and had a good flavor, but still gritty. The patty and cheese were also good, but nothing special on its own. The bacon was terrible. Like the tots, it tasted burnt and like it was cooked on a dirty surface. Its as though they made several batches of bacon, but didn't clean the surface in between batches so burnt oil and pieces stayed with each batch. Overall, a huge disappointment since we want to support local eateries as much as possible . Hopefully others have a better experience and the business thrives, but we won't be...
