This review contradicts a lot of the newest reviews I've seen posted for Wasabi, but it's my honest recount of today's experience with my family.
It was a hot SA day (as usual) and my family and I were looking for a quick meal after picking up my son from school. I should say that Wasabi is not our first pick when it comes to sushi in the medical center area, but our usuals were busy and/or not opened for dinner yet... anyways, we park in the empty parking lot and make our way inside. The restaurant was so stuffy! I wondered if maybe the A/C was struggling to keep the building cool because there was a blower fan running in the corner where they sat us. Aside from the uncomfortable room temperature there was an unpleasant smell. I describe it as an old fried oil musk. Enough about the atmosphere—time to describe the dishes. I ordered calamari for the table... never have I EVER been served calamari perfectly shaped like onion rings. Calamari by nature is imperfect and small ringlets. So we all hesitantly tried this "calamari" and it tasted as fake as it looked. shocking That dish was left for trash. Next, we ordered a tonkatsu bento box, beef broccoli, a California roll, and a small side of simple fried rice. Everyone agreed that by no means was anything appetizing about these meals, however, we clearly racked up a bill each ordering our own dinner plates. We're not ones to let food go to waste... if I had the money to walk out of this place after taking the first bite of our main meals, I would have!
Aside from today's visit, our prior dining experience (within the last 6 months) also left a bad impression on us both in food and atmosphere quality. Today's visit was a hope that last time was just a one-off bad time, but unfortunately it was even worse. We will not be returning and stick loyal to our more favored sushi...
Read moreTonight was mine and my girlfriend's anniversary. We decided to have sushi at a place that we had never been before. We were sorely disappointed. It started out well. We were having trouble deciding on a bottle of sake to get and a server (not the one that was supposedly assigned to our table) offered us samples of the two we were torn between. We also ordered apps and they came out relatively quickly. During this time, another couple was seated. We ordered our entrees and another bottle of sake. The other table also ordered their entrees. About 20 minutes goes by and the other table receives their food. No biggie. We ordered some specialty rolls and expected it to take a bit longer than usual. 20 more minutes go by and the other table receives a 2nd plate of food. 20 more minutes go by and we're out of sake again and have been waiting over an hour for 3 rolls. Our server came by to check on us finally and when we asked where our food was, he panicked and ran off to "check on it" but I'm pretty sure he didn't actually put the order in when we gave it to him. Normally this wouldn't be an issue for me because things happen but he took over an hour to even come check in. 30 more minutes go by and someone I assume was the manager comes by to check on us and we tell him how long we'd been waiting for our food and he said he'd be right back with answers and he was. He got our order made and brought out pretty quickly. Over all, the food was pretty good and the manager comped all the food so we only paid for our drinks so we didn't leave mad or anything like that. We probably won't be going back though. I was going to propose to my girlfriend tonight but it was just such a terrible evening that I couldn't...
Read moreFeb. 2023: Tonight was celebrating a dear friend's birthday and she chose @wasabisushisa for dinner. It had been a while since I last visited.
Happy hour is everyday from 4pm to 7pm. From the happy hour menu, we ordered Chilean Sea Bass with shishito, Bacon Wrapped Scallops, Yellowtail, Salmon, Escolar, Snapper and Shrimp Nigiri. The steal was the Sea Bass! Cooked to perfection and only $8.99! We also had the Iron Chef Roll and Spider Roll. So much delicious food! We shared the Nigori sake. For the birthday, they served Tempura Ice Cream! #burp
The interesting thing is that they also serve Korean and Chinese dishes.
Need to bring Dad and hubby here. I think they would enjoy! If you're in the Medical Center area, this is a must stop place!
2020: Yesterday was International Sushi Day and we stopped to try Wasabi out for happy hour.
It wasn't very crowded. I tried the hot sake and it was very good. While we waited for our food, we were served complimentary miso soup and salad. I also noticed the pretty stained glass windows there.
Definitely felt that there were several nigiri sushi options for happy hour, which both my husband and I like. When the servings came out, I felt that the pieces were pretty generous slices and very fresh. The salmon skin roll was really delicious with the avocado, cucumber and eel sauce.
Maybe next time I'll try some of the happy hour rolls.
Lee did a great job with her service and checking on us. We're looking forward to...
