Modest, unimposing and humble little nook. Unlike the MANY faddish food stops in the bustling Hillcrest area, Alexi's doesn't quite scream at you to come inside. They post their menus in the windows and warmly welcome guests in, but Alexi's doesn't boast the same kind of millennial appeal as many of the unique, eye-catching and generally large/imposing restaurant signs that populate the Hillcrest food scene.
That said, if you do make it in the door, you'll probably notice the myriad of awards that hang on the walls. ALEXI's has apparently won a fair few "best in class" food awards. But you won't find the owner/manager bragging on his establishment. He lets the food speak for itself.
In a word, the owner/manager is a super host making sure you're taken care of from start to finish. Informative, kind and not overly involved in your meal, I definitely felt like he was genuinely interested in making sure the customers were taken care of.
FOOD: we got the sampler platter as an appetizer 10/10, gyros sandwich and the gyros platter. Yum. LOVED my food. Exactly what you'd hope for from gyros. We also tried the Avgolemono soup. As someone who's never had lemon soup, it was quite a surprise, but not necessarily in a bad way. Didn't exactly have anything to compare it to, but if you've never had it, I'd recommend the cup (as opposed to a bowl). Think lemon curd soup with a bit of a vinegar taste and rice. It's unique. Worth a try if you're feeling adventurous. Oh and finished with a piece of baklava. Yep. Do it.
Lastly, the bathroom. 10/10. Single stall, lockable, clean and well-stocked. Good flush on the toilet too. Hate when you try to flush the toilet only to get a weak flush. Not...
Read moreWhat a great discovery! Lots of traditional Greek dishes and an amazing value. We had a party of 3 and ordered: Vegetarian sandwich and water and baklava for desert; #4 lunch combo platter and a soft drink; Vegetarian Moussaka platter and a soft drink. Each platter includes a starch option (fries or rice pilaf); salad and pita bread as well as tsatsiki sauce. The portions were generous, the salad was fresh and crispy. The tsatsiki was a little bland - but still tasty. I like tsatsiki with a little more tang of garlic and cucumber. The service was excellent and the food came out quickly. The interior of the restaurant is not heavily decorated and gives mom & pop vibes of an authentic Greek restaurant in the sense of focusing on the food and service rather than overloading you eyes with distractions. The server was to the point of taking your order and getting it into the kitchen - this could be misconstrued but he was very pleasant and accommodating. My serving was so filling I had a tiny bit to take home as a snack later. Now for the bill ❤️ for all that I've listed, our total with tax and before tip was not even $36!!! In San Diego, Hillcrest area - that's a bargain! We loved it and I'll go back for...
Read moreWe decided after visiting our cousin who was a patient at UCSD Hillcrest we would try some place close to the hospital. So I googled restaurants close by and read reviews on the different restaurants. Parking on the street can be tough to find depending what time you get there. Street parking is metered until 8pm. The restaurant is small and quaint. It does have a lot of light inside. Service is excellent and the food is delicious. I had the beef kabob and my husband had the Mediterranean plate. These dinners came with soup, salad, rice, and French fries. The beef kabob was so delicious-meat was tender and so very flavorful. The Mediterranean plate had chicken, grape leaves and one more item which I forgot the name of it. He really enjoyed his meal and could hardly finish because he was given so much food. The prices are so reasonable for what you get. The guy who takes your order and serves your order was timely and very efficient. He was great and he had good customer service skills. He would walk around and check to see where you were at and he would bring water or whatever you needed a refill for. Great experience with great...
