cupCAKES a la Yola — Restaurant in San Diego

I thought I'd splurge for an expensive looking cake like the ones in all their pictures. I said NO piped border, they gave me a fat border. Now it looks like grocery cake. I was clear on spelling of word and including exclamation mark. They misspelled and can't see the ! bc of the fat border. I said the word wouldn't fit with a border piped and I was right. All the new elegant cakes have a clean straight edge and that's what I was looking forward to and went outside my budget to get. On the plus side, the piped cream was the best part since it was a tiramisu cake. Though the gluten free I ordered was dense and heavy, somewhat damp, possibly just due to it being tiramisu style? I've never heard of this Bakery but decided to give it a try. The Vanilla cupcake was dry. The Chocolate Chip was just ok.. I really enjoyed their red velvet cupcake. It was very moist and not too sweet. So I decided to give it another try a few days later.. I'm giving this place 2 stars due to the handling of my cupcakes on my second visit..I was very disappointed to learn that the young lady went straight from doing work on the ipad and handling some papers to picking up my cupcakes without washing her hands or putting on some gloves. I just don't understand how washing your hands isn't a standard practice for one, but now we're in a pandemic with covid and you're deciding it's better to just go straight to serving someone without proper preparation for handling after doing paperwork and touching...

Yola made us the most beautiful and delicious cake for our recent wedding. We had a relatively small centerpiece cake made for my wife and I to cut and keep and then had several sheet cakes made to serve our guests. We initially went for a tasting several months prior to our wedding and brought my parents. Yola was very kind and accommodating and the cupcakes were incredible. Working with her was a pleasure and she was able to give us everything we asked for. The centerpiece cake turned out gorgeous and everyone at the wedding loved the cake they were served.
