A different (and superior) take on poke'. If you're poke experience is the local poke shop set up like Subway or Chipotle, that is: "base, protein, and topping," this is different and more authentic. You're HERE for the poke; that is raw fish, not the filler. You're presented with a refrigerated case with the selection of prepped fish, tuna, salmon, ahi. Unlike most poke shops, the fish here is prepped in a light coating / marinade that imparts a great flovor, spicy or not, that's the chef's signature. No need to select a dozen toppings /fillers. Serving options include a couple scoops of rice or maybe their take on macaroni salad, all in a foam lunch box. They offered what can best be described as a spam roll, as a side. Great with a drizzle of soy sauce. Besides the soy sauce, the condiment kiosk included a dry sesame seed sprinkle and Sriracha sauce. This is basic, delicious. Makes the menu at In-N-Out seem complicated. While there is a ledge to belly up to to eat, best you bag it and take the 1 block walk to the beach and find a wall to relax on to savor this great value and succulent...
Read moreOverall: No wonder it has so many reviews and 5 stars! It totally deserves it. Although, I do wish I could give it 4.5 stars. Since its in downtown Ocean Beach, parking SUCKS! Good thing we got lucky and found parking. Also, my reviews might also be a little biased given that I was pretty hungry at that time. But you know what they say, hunger is the best condiment.
Food: SPECTACULAR! The freshest fish I've had in San Diego. The furikake is a little sweet and VERY flavorful. The shoyu has an additional sauce packet. I could not eat it without rice. PUNCHES me with flavor. Hahah +3 stars
Service: It was fast. There IS a line out the door but that's because the interior space is so small. From check out to grabbing the food took about 5 minutes. I waited about 15 minutes in the line.
Location: SUCKS! Parking stinks! However, I want to say that this is only a 5 minute walk away from the beach, so once you find parking you are set.
Price: I paid about 17 dollars for this meal. Its a bit on the pricier side, but for the taste of freshness, I'll...
Read moreGreat spot in San Diego for fresh poke that truly reminds me of the poke I had in Hawaii! I went late in the afternoon, very close to them closing for the day, so there was no line at all. There's parking everywhere, so you don't need to worry about that. The staff were so nice and friendly; it's a plus that they're from Hawaii, so you know that their poke is authentic. There were so many options of fish to choose from and they had so many different flavors the canned Hawaiian Sun and Aloha Maid juices! You can either buy the fish per pound, or you can get a poke bowl or a plate. Their prices are a little higher than what I am used to, but it's totally worth it because everything was so fresh. I only visited for their poke, but they also sell Kalua Pig and Chicken Long Rice, which are both classic Hawaiian food. They are a small shop and there isn't seating, but I would recommend taking your food and watching the sunset at the beach or Sunset Cliffs; that's the perfect way to...
