The food here was very meh. When we asked for side plates, they gave us wet plates that still has food bits on them. Overall, the place seemed overhyped, and we will not be returning. We tried the nigiri, which is ordered per 1 piece. The salmon nigiri was ok, not good but not too bad, but the hamachi did not taste good and smelled fishy. I ordered a customized hand roll and that tasted fine as well, we also tried the tempura shrimp roll which was pretty tasty. Our favorite were the fried gyozas. I noticed a lot of people came here for the bento box, maybe that’s better, I don’t know.

I rarely give low rated reviews. It wasnt a busy night. We werent greeted or helped. We were just looked at without smiles. Actually, they were laughing at us and the kitchen staff was called to look. They noticed I noticed thats probably why we weren't approached or greeted. *(my date was way taller than me.) We sat ourselves. We were only helped when I stared at 1 server and raised my hand. The food was okay. Very affordable but not much flavor. Some dishes you get a lot for how much you pay compared to most places.

This place doesn't feel authentic but is still pretty expensive. It also doesn't look very clean (dirty rusty fridge next to the register, old napkin under the table...). You have to order and pay before you seat. We took crunchy roll, tempura roll and rainbow roll. The rolls looked sloppily made and one of the fish didn't taste fresh at all. The Tempura was kind of slimy so not what you would expect. Only good point, employees were nice. Very disappointed for the place.

I used to love going to niban. Back in the day they used to have good food at a reasonable price but they have really gone down hill. I just ordered from them today and they have nearly doubled their prices AND on top of that they are giving us less food. Like I understand in this tough economy businesses have to adjust prices and such but you either raise your prices OR slim down your portions you don't do both that is absolute BS and bad for business for your customers to slap them with both as a business you only need to do one or the other to for losses not both. On top of that and this is what I am most upset about I went online before I ordered to look at their menu which also had their alleged pricing for each item and I ordered my food based off of those prices they had listed online so I went ahead and called and place my order and when I go to pick up my food they say it's $24 when according to the published menu prices I was expecting to pay around $12 for my meal so I pay for it and I go home and I double checked online to verify and yeah they absolutely are charging double the price of what they are advertising online. So I'm definitely calling false advertisement on that and I'm probably going to dispute the charge with my bank. This place has got to update there online menu prices because that is straight up false advertising and that is complete BS...

This is my favorite restaurant in San Diego for several reasons. I’ve been eating here for over 15 years and they have NEVER fulfilled my order wrong. It’s always a great deal, it’s always good cuts of meat. I never throw away food. It’s always super tasty, and the hot food here is way better than most - so I can order both sushi and hot food here and not be worried about the quality of either. The rolls are big. Bigger than other casual Japanese restaurants. Dining in is a pleasure as well as takeout. Their staff is super friendly. They’ve never had to fix anything (because nothing has ever been wrong!) but I’m 110% sure they would do it in a heartbeat if I asked. Wait is short. I’ve never waited more than 25 minutes for takeout or 10 minutes at a table. I recommend literally everything on the hot food menu. The curry udon is a favorite as well as the Katsu-Don (I order chicken). Love their tamago nigiri as it’s the closest In San Diego that I can get compared to what I experience in...

25+Yrs! I'm Done! I/We have loved Niban/Ichiban locations.. But No More! They have become "Penny Wise & Dollar Foolish!" Over the last 3-4 yrs Everything has gotten smaller n smaller and now up charge on top of up charge..The quality has been slipping constantly due to cutbacks and ingredient changes for cost benefit while the prices keep going up! If the quality was the same or better you as a consumer can justify price increases..but when prices keep going up with lower standards in ingredients and service affected by operational decisions from management/ownership its really sad because they are sinking this ship. The place was empty and my family was so surprised going IN how easy it was to get a table, but when going out we figured out WHY It was so easy?! I hope they read this and correct these catastrophic changes. Goodbye 25+ yrs it's been so...
