If you're going to this place and you're ordering anything but a burger, you're doing it wrong. If you're going to this place expecting a fancy burger with a brioche bun, arugula, or some kind of aioli spread, you're also doing it wrong.
But if you've come to Bill's expecting an amazing, traditional "American style" hamburger, fries, and a milkshake, then you've come to the right place. This is one of the ONLY good burger places in the Richmond, and one of the best burger places in San Francisco. It's not fancy, but it's really good, and you'll get one of the best burgers you've ever had for like $15, after tax and tip. How often do you find that in SF?
The burgers are always cooked to order, and accurately. They have a pretty wide variety of toppings to choose from, and it even gets a little exotic, with stuff like beets and pineapple and cole slaw. But that's all just a variation on a very simple specialty: a burger. The fries are cut from whole potatoes, skin on, and they're pretty good. The milkshakes are hand churned with real ice cream, and they give you the half-full overflow tin. They aren't messing around. They have a pretty big menu with breakfast stuff, sandwiches, etc. but again... if you're not getting a burger, you're doing it wrong.
The wait staff are all very friendly and I've never had a bad experience here. Never had an order messed up, never waited too long, etc.
My usual order is a regular cheeseburger with bacon, fries, and a chocolate shake. In a town full of culinary wonders from all around the world, sometimes you just want to relax and have a greasy, delicious, heart attack-inducing burger. This is that burger. Do yourself a favor...
Read moreWent to bills place for the first time in a while. Always known for quality of product. Im sad to say i was disappointed. Service was fine but the quality was lacking from my experience and expection. Burger was cooked dry. Well done is one thing (and if you know anything about foodborn illness, you just dont eat rare hamburger. Not the same as steak). Fries were decent. I saw signs that they were still punching fresh potatoes for fries.yeay! Looks like they might be still grinding fresh chuck but couldnt tell from the wood on my plate. Sorry. They used to chop the onions for grilling fine which is the only way i can eat them and i learned to enjoy them that way at bills place... but now they are chopped large and burned as opposed to carmalized as they once were. Shake was not bad but the warm glass mug it was served in did it no justice. Music? Once apon a time they had music? I am saddened by my experience. Maybe its because i grew up with B.P. and expected soo much more. Maybe this was just a one off? New owner 'wally " was great. I truly hope you and your pops do well here but i dont know that i can afford the cost of repeating this experience. U gotta maintain the quality of the institution you have aquired if you want to remain "legendary " for the next 20+ years. I wish you the best (and wish i could help. Maybe this will?) but u gotta know and thats why here and not yelp. Good...
Read moreIve been coming here for over 20 years. When I first came to San Francisco I was lamenting the lack of a good burger in the city. It took me a while to discover Bills and I still remember my first bite back in 1997. Ive been coming back since I moved back to Australia and now I bring my sons here every time we come to visit family. Bills are simply the best tasting burger Ive ever eaten and it is consistently brilliant. Fresh ground chuck cooked to your order, plus the fries are really good. My sons love Bills because the burgers are simply delicious. They have taken the Boar burger off the menu but they will still make it for me-hows that for service? Great place, great neighbourhood icon. Bill himself has passed but left a legacy to the people of the Richmond District, and that legacy is kept alive by the current owners. Great place, cant speak highly enough of the food. I used to have a burger just before getting to SFO and stepping onto the plane flying back to Australia as I hate airline food, a Bills burger would sustain me for the whole 14 hours flight. Cant beat that! PLEASE San Francisco, KEEP BILLS ALIVE DURING THE PANDEMIC SO FUTURE GENERATIONS CAN EAT THESE...
