Racism, although dangerous in all forms, can be subtle…as was the case with my experience dining at ChinoYang’s. My husband and I were the only diners in the restaurant given forks, as opposed to chopsticks. Now, some tables had chopsticks already provided (ours was not one of them), so I wanted to give the benefit of the doubt that perhaps the waitress just forgot to offer us some. However, as we dined and all of the tables were full (we were the only Black patrons) of Asian, white and other patrons, I realized every other table was provided chopsticks except for us. We weren't even asked if we wanted some, and we usually both use chopsticks when dining at Asian establishments. Although the food was delicious, these acts usually result in feelings of severe discomfort and made me feel exceptionally unwelcomed. Malicious or not (perhaps it was not), what is abundantly clear is that it was noticed that we were “different”, and treated as such. We paid, tipped, and left…and I feel just a bit lower in mood than when I arrived. I just wanted the experience to end.
I’m visiting from NYC, and wanted to recommend this place, but I unfortunately cannot do so. To the restaurant: please be aware of these behaviors. We...
Read moreAbsolutely phenomenal — hands down the best Hunan food I’ve ever had in the U.S.! We ordered three dishes, and every single one was packed with bold, authentic flavors that instantly reminded me of home-style cooking done right. The spice level, the freshness, and the balance of flavors were all spot on. You can really tell the chef knows what true Hunan cuisine should taste like — not watered down, not Americanized, just pure perfection.
The portions were generous, the prices were very reasonable, and the service was friendly and warm. Honestly, I felt like we got way more than what we paid for. It’s rare to find a restaurant that gets everything right — food, value, and authenticity — but ChinoYang’s truly delivers. Even the restaurant is kind small for big group, though it is super clean and warmed!
If I could give more than five stars, I absolutely would. Five stars is the limit of the rating scale, not the limit of this restaurant’s excellence. This place sets the bar above and beyond. A must-try for anyone who loves real Hunan food — you’ll leave with a happy heart and a...
Read moreSo happy I finally went here. I didn’t eat in but I walked in and ordered take out. My food was incredible and Jamie, who helped me choose my dishes (and cooked?) is a very friendly and fun person with a beautiful smile. I ordered string beans with tofu very spicy, fish with black bean sauce and they have a special now where you get either chow mein or fried rice with 2 entrees. Jamie helped me with substituting veggies that I didn’t care for and I was happily surprised how accommodating she was. I can’t wait to go back and try other dishes. Portions are huge.
Update: Got takeout yesterday with my bf who is Chinese and he loves your food as much as me and wants to come back. You are my favorite Chinese...
