This place went from holding a super special place in my heart as my perfect birthday cake, to making me boycott it, all with one phone call.
My girlfriend called this morning (a Thursday) requesting a cake for Sunday. We wanted a slight modification for an allergy, which they accommodated without issue last year: a carrot cake without nuts. Not only were we told that this modification would not be possible - a bit shocking for a place that seemingly bakes their own goods - but we were told that they required 72 hour notice and therefore could not have the cake ready by Sunday. Of course, we respect this need⦠if 72 hours from now werenāt, in fact, Sunday morning. If weāre picking hairs, as the woman on the other line clearly wished to do, our pick up time would have been 76 hours from the time of the call.
Add onto all of this an aura of annoyance and rudeness from the staff - for what is a completely reasonable request - and my partner ended the phone call deeply upset. This same time last year, we ordered the nut-free carrot cake on Wednesday for a Friday party.
I, for one, am so disappointed. Kahnfections had been my favorite cake shop in the city. I had been looking forward to getting it for my birthday for weeks. To learn that they refused to accommodate my allergy, refused to make a cake within their required time frame, and were also rude to my partner? It is a deep shame. I will not be going here anymore, and that does not feel like...
Ā Ā Ā Read more5 stars for their banging biscuit sandwich with egg, $9. I got their classic buttermilk biscuit with garlic aioli and cheddar cheese. Their vegetables rotate, and todayās was red onions, which I decided to pass on. The sandwich is small but filling: a buttery crumbly biscuit with melted cheddar surrounding fluffy scrambled eggs. The whole thing is flavorful, although I couldnāt find the garlic aioli as its own note.
I think the price point is a bit high, although this may just be the new cost of doing business in this economy: upgrading to a flavored biscuit costs $0.50, avocado costs $2, chicken costs $2. You could easily have yourself paying $15 for a breakfast sandwich. I was looking at my old Yelp reviews for Devilās Teeth Baking Company, and their regular breakfast sandwich was $5.50 back in 2015 ($6.75 if you got it with avocado and aioli, the special), $9.50 in 2020 for the special. Recent reviews suggest that Devilās breakfast sandwich is now $10 for regular, $11.50 for special. I prefer Kahnfectionsā biscuit over Devilās though. I also live much closer to Kahnfectionsā than Devilās.
They have a decent variety of other offerings, including pastries, salads, and coffee....
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThe rainbow croissants for Pride are what got me in the door. But the flavor is what keeps me coming back on a weekly basis. These are top-notch laminated pastries. I'm still thinking about the Everything Croissant I was lucky enough to try a month ago.
My must-haves are the croissants: plain, chocolate, and the almond is just divinely decadent.
Another go-to are the personal quiches, but they tend to sell out fast, leaving me with a broken heart and an empty belly. I've never had a quiche with a puff pastry crust and wow, so yummy. We went to Paris this summer and I packed these in my carry-on. They definitely stand up to anything you can get from a traditional french patisserie.
I'd say this spot is more of a wholesale bakery that happens to have a counter where you can buy food and coffee. It's not exactly the atmosphere of Le Marais, Craftsman and Wolves, or even Le Boulangerie de San Francisco. That said, everything they do is done well and I love grabbing a table outside and enjoying a quiet moment in...
