Hidden Gem in SoMa – Fresh, Flavorful, and Fantastic!

I stumbled upon Kombu Restaurant in SoMa and it instantly became one of my new go-to spots for sushi and fresh Japanese-inspired dishes. Everything I ordered was exceptionally good, both in flavor and presentation. • Seafood Poke Salad: A knockout. Super fresh cuts of fish, perfectly ripened avocado, seaweed, cucumber, and a light but umami-rich dressing. It’s hearty and clean at the same time. • Cucumber Salad: Crisp, refreshing, and exactly what I needed to balance the other rich dishes. Light sesame flavor with fresh microgreens on top—simple but elegant. • Seaweed Salad: Packed with flavor, texture, and a slight zing. This isn’t your basic seaweed side—it’s vibrant and generously portioned. • California Roll & Salmon Avocado Roll: Classic, but done right. The rice was perfectly seasoned, and the fish tasted fresh—not fishy or bland like at some places. Creamy avocado, crunchy cucumber, and smooth crab—every bite was balanced and satisfying.

Prices were totally reasonable for the quality, and the packaging (for takeout) was sturdy and well-designed. I also appreciated how clean and professional everything felt—from the branding to the freshness of the ingredients.

Pro tip: Don’t sleep on the poke salad. It’s restaurant-quality with delivery convenience.

Really solid spot with high quality ingredients! They opened three months ago and love the new renovation. Everything we tried was top quality - some of the best uni we had, not fishy at all. Recommend the kampachi carpaccio, poke salad was surprisingly good, and the rolls were got were solid too. The toro special roll was definitely on the heavier side so make sure to balance it out with some veggie dishes. Super happy for a high quality sushi place in soma and hope they’ll expand their menu! The roll selection can include some lighter options and not everything needs to have salmon and avocado! Will be back to try the nigiris tho!

Edit 1/1: came back to try a few more rolls and temakis and all still super solid! The a5 wagyu roll, toro temaki and sunflower roll were great. Service was super attentive and offered my grandma who doesn’t rly eat raw fish some chawanmushi - really appreciated...

Pretty new place so I went to check it out. Let me preface by saying I love sushi and have eaten quite a lot and Kombu was fantastic. Highlights: one of the best omakase nigiri platters Ive had - everything looked spectacular and tasted even better; the wagyu nigiri (which I almost never order because its usually just ok) was phenomenal; the staff and chef were super friendly and everything we ordered was really good. For the price, I have not had better sushi in SF. Also, two side notes: we ordered the veggie roll - usually not a goto - and it was the best one Ive had; and the savory egg custard is on point. 10/10...

Tried this sushi restaurant for the first time and we are definitely coming back! 🎉 Superb quality of fish/sashimi and a variety of selection. Had nigiri taste platter which included fatty tuna, fatty yellowtail, and some other fish that I do not recall names. What I do remember is they all are delicious!!! Modern deco with only a few tables paired with traditional high quality Japanese food, it was an excellent dining experience. Already planning our next visit. If you are in the area, you should give this place a try🎏🥳🍣🎊
