I was a bit worried after reading some reviews on here but really, it worked out well. Room: Okay guys, the rooms are small. Why? It is a very old building, rooms were not built as big in the past as they are now. It reminded me of when I stayed at a B&B in downtown London and I've definitely stayed in smaller when I visited Tokyo. Adjust your expectations for this hotel in terms of size, it is much more akin to European sizes. The room worked well for me, I had an ensuite (Deluxe Full) on floor 7 facing ... a wall. Which is fine. You definitely want to bring ear plugs if you are sensitive to noise, the walls are NOT thick. There was a window above my door but there were blinds and no light came in. The blinds work just fine. My biggest complaint with the room is the lack of small coffee maker or tea kettle. This would vastly improve the room. Having free coffee in the morning in the lobby is not really an amenity when competition has it right in the guest rooms. But, overall the hotel is clean and so was my room when I checked in. I stayed for 3 nights (just me) and it worked for my needs. Though, I forget if it was policy but the whole time my room wasn't serviced/cleaned. Be prepared to be warm. It's very stuffy in the hallways and room. There is a fan but no A/C. This is okay for winter but I wouldn't stay during summer. Staff: They are polite but not very clear when explaining policies, particularly for early check in/late check out. When I sent an email regarding concerns about reviews, they did not address it. Location: Can't be beat if you're going to the convention center. The lobby doors are by key access only (there is a buzzer you can notify staff for when you arrive) and that really helped to feel safe. Policies: So, what they DON'T advertise on their website is that when you check in, you pay a $75 deposit when you check in. No card for incidentals, just a full fee of $75. They do refund this once you check out, mine was refunded the day after I checked out. I read some comments on here about the smell of cigarette smoke. This got me nervous. Well, they make it very clear that this is a non-smoking hotel and anyone smoking pays $200 (or $250) if found ignoring the policy. So if you smell smoke, contact the front desk so they can handle it. There is an extra fee to check in early, I believe $25? Something like that. If you want to check out late, it depends how full they are. If they can accommodate it, the first hour after check out is free but then another hour was .. about $12? That's as late as I stayed so more fees if you stay later. They do hold your luggage after check out if you need. I think it would be good to have these extra fees listed on the website so guests can properly budget. Lobby: I had a late flight and I ended up getting sick during my trip. I was planning on doing some sightseeing before my flight but I needed to rest. Since I already checked out, they let me hang out and rest on the couch for a few hours (2-4). When I went, it was beautifully decorated for the winter holidays. There is only 1 elevator (old building) but it wasn't terribly slow, not fast, but decent. For Plus Size People: I would caution you about booking this hotel. In my experience, it would be hard to move around the room and the shower is VERY small. I'm plus size myself but not terribly wide so I was able to shower by sticking to the back corner but I could see it being impossible for individuals that need more room on either side in the shower (it's really a small square). This is adequate but not for larger plus size individuals.
Overall: I would not call this a 3-star hotel simply because it lacks in amenities that other 3 stars have. The price reflects lower than 3 star due to those lack of amenities and smaller rooms. The location (and price) truly cannot be beat for attending conventions, though. I would recommend this hotel to friends but would make sure they have correct...
Read moreI stayed for 8 nights at the Mosser. At time of writing I am in my late 20s, single, and am on my last night here. I am staying in a QUEEN SHARED BATHROOM room: 1 queen bed 1 sink in bedroom (complete with a small shelf for toiletries, a large, flat mirror, separate vanity light, blow dryer, towel hangers, and a toiletries basket to carry to the shower) 1 nightstand - quite small, but can fit many things if organized well 1 VERY LARGE CLOSET - I have a huge suitcase with me and it fits, many clothing hangers, a shelf up top... excellent space. There is an iron and an ironing board inside the closet that I could take out. This was very helpful for me to iron my professional clothing. 1 rolling chair and 1 stool 1 medium sized wastebasket - ask the hotel staff, and they will give you another trash bag if you use this up
This style room doesn't have a toilet or a shower, however there were two toilets across the hall from me, and two showers around each corner. I never had to wait to use either toilet or shower, even though there were a couple other women who I shared with. Toilet and shower are cleaned multiple times a day.
The room is a bit small and might be cramped if you are with a partner. It is ideal for a single person or for a very organized couple. Since I am alone, I was quite pleased with the space.
The website is very user friendly. I booked my stay on the hotel website and longer than 1 week stay, basically half off. I was also able to check in early by checking off the option to do so on the site. They had my room ready when I checked in - zero wait time. Any time I had questions or needed help from the staff, they were friendly and helpful.
There is no air conditioning - just a ceiling fan. I was not bothered by this since San Francisco has a moderate climate - I left my window cracked and turned the fan on if I was feeling warm. This could pose a problem for visitors who are not comfortable with city noise, since the noise does filter into the room (even up on the 8th floor). Personally, I did not have trouble falling asleep and just wore headphones if it did bother me. If you struggle with noise I recommend earplugs.
There is laundry in the basement of the hotel. You can buy detergent at the front desk for $1. There is a microwave in a small alcove in the lobby. Super convenient, since there are multiple grocery stores less than half a block in either direction of the hotel. You will not break the bank eating out if you stay for a long time.
There are plenty of outlets to charge all of your electronics.
Location is close to many different transit. I could get to many different neighborhoods in the city from just a half block away in any direction.
Some improvements I can recommend to hotel management: Please supply the rooms with mini fridge A small desk or at least another nightstand (just more counter space) would be nice in the Queen Shared BR rooms. Please provide a safe inside the rooms
A huge green flag for me is that there have likely been renovations here quite recently - I reviews complaining about sink cabinets making it difficult to use the sink, and those have been replaced for flat mirrors (at least in my room).
Overall, I had a good experience. It is clean and private here. I would return on my next trip to...
Read moreThis is most definitely not a 3 star experience! The building is old and decrepit and little renovation has occurred since its construction. The hallway carpets all outrageously dirty with a strong odor of mildew, mold, URINE, and strong chemicals. Luckily, the odor inside the room was not as strong. However, I had to make a trail from the bathroom to the bed with towels so that my feet did not get sticky from the carpet.
For people with allergies, you do not want to stay here. I had to use the Netti-pot every night and morning just to be able to breath. Additionally, the Mosser fails to warn people before they make a reservation that they are currently under construction in the lobby and that they are using materials that are deemed by the state of CA as birth defect causing. Upon your arrival to the hotel, you will get to read the plaque that indicates your lovely visit to San Francisco could be impairing your health and the health of your children.
If you are bringing children, you should be advised that this hotel is a party hotel where guests party all night long. On our last night, we had to call the front desk on three different occasions starting at 2:30 am. It did not help that we had to be up at 6 am to catch our plane.
In terms of management, the Mosser can not get anymore shady. When I talked with the front desk clerk during my early morning checkout about being up all night on our last night due to the neighbors partying to "Insane in the Brain," she informed me that she had documented the disturbances and that the manager would give me a call to take care of the matter. After waiting two weeks, I had to call the manager. I was eventually told that I could get a free night's stay at the Mosser on a gift-card. When I politely informed the manager that I would rather have a refund since I have no plans to return to this hotel, I was told that I could only receive a 50% refund since I had occupied the room all night., regardless of whether I slept in it. The manager stated that they never give back 100% refunds.
With taxes and fees, I ended up paying about $267 a night for a horrible experience. Neither my husband and I want to go back to San Francisco anytime in the near future as a result. Your hotel experience can really shape your trip. The Marriott is right across the street. Take my advice and book...
