I stopped by this establishment. I wanted to order 2 Turkey bacon clubs and I was told by the older lady working there (assuming it’s the owner) that they didn’t have any Turkey so she offered to chicken instead in substitution. I said yes. As we were talking and she was ringing up the transaction, she told me the total $23.35 and she asked cash or Venmo. I said Venmo and didn’t think much of it at that moment but thought it’s a bit pricey. I looked at the menu and the price is $8.75 each plus tax which this transaction didn’t make sense. I kindly asked her and she said she charged $2.00 each extra for bacon. I said you never told me that, you offered a substitution to a meat that you didn’t not have. I asked her for a copy of the receipt and she didn’t give me one so I took a picture of it. She didn’t refund me for the inconvenience and for her mistake. As as I was getting home, I was talking to my neighbor and told them if they have gone to this restaurant, they said it’s been a while since they had a similar situation with them overcharging for sandwiches without disclosing it, kinda like she’s money hungry and wants to tip herself. This establishment practices shady tactics and I’m sure since it’s cash only and Venmo, I’m sure they are dodging taxes. I have also reached out to Venmo to ensure their account is set up as a merchant account and not private, we should all pay our fair...
Read moreReally nice cozy place with great sandwhiches and really good chai! They have various sandwhiches (including more than one vegetarian option), different types of fancy lattes and chai lattes (the ginger chai is great for warming you up, it's like drinking home made ginger snaps or ginger bread with extra spice and the vanilla chai is still delightfully spicy with a sweetness that is apparent but not overpowering), there are labeled pictures of the sandwhiches at eye level on the wall when you come in and the boards aren't hars to read either making it much easier for visually impaired folks (myself included) to order, they also have baked goods and bagels at the counter and a case with juices/sodas (odwalla, san pelegrino and the like). The people who work there are really nice/friendy and seem to know their frequent customers by name. The place is pretty quiet with soft classical music playing (balletic relaxing stuff) and all in all it makes a nice spot to duck into when you've had enough of the city.
It actually reminds me of Nammy's, my favorite Vietnamese sandwhich shop in Olympia Washington. My favorite sandwhich here is...
Read moreI’ve been to Lava Java a few times and always had at least decent experiences until this morning. I was a regular. There’s an older and younger woman both working. This morning I tried to grab lunch (a chicken breast sandwich) on my way to work because I wouldn’t make it back on time with my lunch break and the younger one was so rude. She asked me what I wanted, and when I told her “a chicken breast sandwich” she replied “This will the last time we make a sandwich in the morning. Do you always eat lunch before breakfast?”. I said “If there’s a problem I don’t have to buy it from you”, and she just ignored me saying “You bought a sandwich in the morning before. Do you want everything on your sandwich?”. I repeated “If there’s a problem, I don’t have to buy it from you” and she waived her hand dismissively. I left after in disbelief.
While I do understand it’s a bit strange to buy lunch in the morning, some people (and this was my case) buy it to save for later because of work. There’s no sign signifying which hours customers can/can’t buy what either.
I will not be...
