Last weekend, I decided to try out Matcha Cafe Maiko in San Francisco, hoping for a delightful experience with their renowned matcha treats. As soon as I arrived, I noticed that the line extended outside the door. Despite the anticipation, the inefficiency in line management was immediately evident. The staff seemed overwhelmed, and there was no clear system in place to streamline orders. Customers stood waiting for prolonged periods, which caused frustration and restlessness. The lack of organization significantly dampened the initial excitement and set a disappointing tone for the visit.
Inside the cafe, the atmosphere was nothing short of chaotic. The seating area was not only crowded but also poorly arranged, making it difficult to navigate through the throngs of people. The compact space amplified the bustling noise, making it hard to hold conversations or relax while enjoying the treats. This overcrowded environment, combined with the lengthening line outside, showed a disconnect between the cafe’s popularity and its capacity to accommodate patrons comfortably. The overall ambiance felt more stressful than inviting, detracting from the enjoyable aspect of dining out.
Despite these hurdles, the matcha tea and boba swirls were undeniably delicious. The rich, earthy flavor of the matcha paired perfectly with the soft, chewy boba, creating a harmonious blend of taste and texture. This delectable offering almost made up for the subpar service and crowded setting. The ultimate disappointment lay in the contrast between the high quality of the matcha treats and the mediocre service experience. With better line management and a more spacious, well-organized interior, Matcha Cafe Maiko could easily become a favorite spot for many, maximizing the potential of their truly delightful...
Read moreMatcha Maiko is has 3 locations in the San Francisco area in California. I went to the location at the Stonegalleria which is located near San Francisco State University. Matcha Maiko is on the 2nd level near the food court and my first impression was yay no line!
I got the vanilla and strawberry ice cream! I really like how creamy both of these ice creams are and how fresh they turned out to be. I really like the taste of plain vanilla and how lucious it taste. I like the strawberry however, I tasted no strawberry and I feel that the strawberry should be distinct in the ice cream. I felt it tasted like the vanilla with that same flavor but it was still creamy and smooth. It was kind of a miss on me with the seasonal strawberry flavor ice cream and I love strawberry so much so I was disappointed when I tasted no strawberry.
I did try their Matcha Maiko special with their matcha ice cream. I can see why they are named matcha Maiko because their matcha is premium, fresh, and well balanced! It’s basically like a yogurt parfait except with matcha ice cream. I liked the mochi in the ice cream and the crunchy texture of the granola (I think that’s what it is). I thought it completed the dessert and you always get that nice crunch, the squishyness of the mochi, and the bitter sweet flavor of the matcha! I thought it was delicious!
Overall I recommend their vanilla and matcha ice cream however their strawberry flavor was a miss for me but it does look pretty. I would go back but probably only get the matcha and or...
Read morei'm a huge hojicha lover and have been seeking a solid hojicha/matcha mochi parfait spot in the bay area after having my favorite one in seattle. spent the day at japantown and decided to satisfy my hojicha cornflake mochi craving at matcha cafe maiko :,)
// ambiance // this location is in the bottom floor of japantown (it can get hot). the store has some space to stand but most people take their drinks/ice cream to go. there's some indoor seating in the building but i took mine outside and ate it where it was cooler.
// service // luckily i came ~2pm on a sunday and the line was pretty short. my order was ready in around 5 minutes. they call your name/order # when it is ready.
// price + portion // the maiko special parfaits are $9.99. for me, it is worth it since soft serve is $6.40 and the special comes with so many more toppings which make it complete imo.
// maiko special (with hojicha) $9.99 // hojicha soft serve, mochi, chestnut, cornflakes, red bean, jelly, matcha cake and a bit of matcha soft serve at the bottom. my favorite parts are the mochi, soft serve, and cornflakes. cake is a little dry and small amounts of red bean and jelly,
their hojicha is on the milder side (more milky/sweet) but it still has that nice roasted green tea flavor i was looking for.
// would i reorder/return? // there are several matcha cafe maikos in the bay area. i would return if i was craving a matcha or hojicha parfait. otherwise, if you're looking for stronger matcha, i'd probably go...
