I recently experienced the epitome of bad management at the Rodeway Inn Civic Center in San Francisco. I had stayed there multiple times in the past without incident. I didn't complain that the ice maker has been out of order for years. I didn't complain about two abandoned cars that were parked in their very limited parking which meant that guests had to park out in the street alongside people living in tents on the sidewalk. I didn't complain about other minor incidents because this is a very inexpensive hotel that I use primarily when I'm on business in San Francisco and I simply need a clean room for the night.
After my fourth stay in under two weeks I noticed two significant cleaning issues in my room. I reported these to management as I checked out. The manager on duty was not authorized to do anything about the situation and referred me to the general manager, whom I emailed and stated my concerns along with photos of this issues. The manager apologized for the oversight and offered a $25 deduction in the room rate which I accepted. Upon reviewing my credit card statement, I saw that indeed there had been a deduction, but that was immediately followed by a charge for the same $25! Being righteously upset, I confronted the manager via email and asked him if he really thought he was going to get away with that. He again apologized, this time blaming it on new employees that were not familiar with the payment system.
Fast forward to my next reservation. I had booked a room, and when I was in the car literally headed to the hotel, I saw that I had a missed call from the hotel. I called and asked if everything was fine with my reservation. The manager on duty informed me that my reservation had been canceled and I had been placed on the DNR (do not rent) list! So THIS is how management at this hotel treats those that have valid concerns about their stays!
I have sent multiple emails to management informing them that despite the fact that I saw their move as an act of war, that I was willing to forgive and forget. But I am also now the recipient of the royal silent treatment. I informed the manager that if he did not remove me from the DNR list, that I would share about my experience everywhere I possibly could, and I am doing that now. I could list so many things about this property that would shock potential guests. Again, all I need is a quiet place with a clean room, and this property provides barely that but it works for me and my minimalist expectations.
The one time I complained about the cleanliness issues, I was banned from future...

Read moreThe Rodeway Inn Civic Center is a two star budget hotel a few blocks away from San Francisco’s City Hall, the Opera House, and Symphony Hall. Check-in was smooth and the front desk personnel were pleasant. When you enter the tiny check-in area your olfactory organs will be greeted by the very strong scent associated with cooking curries.
As of January 1, 2017, there is an ongoing construction project during daylight hours, as guest rooms are being refurbished. In addition, the very small elevator serving three floors is currently out of order. If you have difficulty climbing stairs you should find a different hotel.
The guest rooms that have had a cosmetic facelift (new wood laminate floors, fresh paint on the walls, new bath fittings and fixtures) provide a more comfortable stay than the rooms decorated in the 1980’s. The furniture isn’t being upgraded or replaced, and the rooms with new flooring and no carpeting, allow you to hear the conversations and footsteps and canoodling in the room above you. Request a third floor room if possible.
The mattress was soft, the blanket thin, and the heat during the cold rainy weather was barely adequate. The hot water was plentiful, the two bath towels provided were coarse and small, and the bar of soap and one small bottle of shampoo reflect the no-frills nature of the hotel. Quite a few stray very long strands of hair from Rapunzel or a previous guest were found in the room and bathroom.
The free WIFI was horrendous. When I complained to management they said they invested in a new robust WIFI system. I found that there is nothing robust or new about it. Connections frequently dropped and streaming video stuttered. If you require a strong WIFI signal it’s not currently available at the Rodeway Inn.
There is no restaurant on property and dining options are limited in the immediate area around the hotel. There is a pizza restaurant and fast food restaurant close by.
The Rodeway Inn Civic Center is a no-frills unremarkable budget hotel that’s acceptable when you can’t find another hotel that suits your needs, and you’re in San Francisco for a very short stay and you just need a place to...
