I was looking for a place in The Mission to bring some friends who like craft beer and pinball. I found Shotwells. It’s a little more down tempo, so if you’re looking to rage face, it’s probably not the place for you. The place itself is a historic saloon-style bar with an old timey feel. Even today, it probably wouldn’t be weird to see gold rush era guys sitting around lamenting their bad days.
They only serve beer, wine, and sangria. Normally, I feel like these places are a little pretentious, but nobody gave me a second look when I ordered a PBR and my friend ordered a Miller High Life. The staff is very friendly and one of the patrons suggested I try a cider since I’m not super into craft beer. The cider was awesome. Highly recommended.
They don’t have a full kitchen but they do have snacks. We ended up trying some pimiento cheese and crackers which was really good and my friend ordered the bourbon spiced almonds. There were none left for me to try which I take as a good sign.

Read moreUnique old school bar with chill vibes that accepts credit cards. Easy to have a good time with friends or strike up a conversation with a stranger as the music isn't intrusive and the bartender is more than attentive and friendly. Pinball in the back, board games are a fun option and a single pool table with a chalk board for keeping track of who plays next. Only serves beer due to an old law prohibiting the sale of liquor but that didn't deter my group.
Would definitely stop by again to see if my wonderful experience is the norm. Give it a try, I'm sure you won't be...
Read moreMy friend and I went looking for a day bar for a drink to catch up and luckily they were open around 4 in the afternoon!
This neighborhood bar really feels like a local spot. Well lit during the day with ample counter seating and tables, along with a billiards table for some friendly competition.
Bartender was really friendly and eager to share what beers and ciders were on tap. Selection mostly made up of local drafts meaning the quality was really good.
Love finding these little neighborhood gems and I hope they continue to last for as long...
