Trying so hard to be a cool kid in Vegas, but doesn't have the food quality to back it up. This new spot in DT San Jose opened at the end of March is overpriced for just ok food--and deplorable steak--but great cocktails and beignets.
Food: 3 Service: 4 Atmosphere: 3 Cost to worth it ratio: 1 ($400 dinner for salad, appetizer, 3 entrees, dessert, and few drinks. I'm fine paying that for a special dinner, but here there were too many misses not being high quality food for that price point) Opentableable: yes Return worthiness: not for dinner, only for happy hour cocktails and beignets
Highlights: Beignets: lightest version I've had--like an airy popover but the powdered sugar version. Loved the crisp and they were humongous. Fun with the 3 sauces: chocolate, dulce de leche, and raspberry compote. 4.5 stars Cocktails: enjoyed their martinis which was a bright spot to the dinner. Got the standard which was their version of a dirty martini and it was cold, subtly flavored, and dellcious. 4.5 stars Cornbread: sweet and moist pieces, though didn't taste much spice. 3.5 stars Arugula salad: pretty basic with cucumbers, cashews, and shaved parm but huge portion and refreshing. 3.5 stars Waiter: very sweet guy helping us we liked.
Midlights: Atmosphere: restaurant split into 2 areas with a brighter area on one side and darker loungey on the other. Both have their own bars and are relatively loud. Some booths in the front dining room are right in the bar area. I'm all for a lively fun party atmosphere, but seemed to be off somehow even for a Friday night. Katsu: huge piece of breaded pork. Crispy with decent flavor and enjoyed the sauce with the mushrooms. 3 stars Agnolotti: was fine but not standout. Didn't get much lemon and expecting more out of the Parmesan cheese sauce. 3 stars
Lowlights: Ribeye: quality was not there--mid level meat lacking flavor and thinner cut than a standard rib eye. We ordered medium rare and it came borderline well done. I saw other Yelpers had this issue as well with the tomahawk being overcooked, so sadly they haven't figured that out yet. And if you are going to try to serve nice steaks, these are the basics. My carnivore family eats a lot of steak at restaurants and even when it was redone, the steak was not good which was disappointing--and especially for $85 this one left us unhappy. 1 stars Birria rib: impressive presentation but super fatty with the big bone and not much meat. Meat was tender but maybe only 4 bites worth after separating out the far. The sauce flavor also was somehow spicy yet lacking. Again on the price point, not worth $18. 2 stars
Letdown for a new spot that in theory sounded great. Would come back only for a happy...
Read moreHad a reservation during opening weekend. We walked in and the space was beautiful. That's about where the good ended for us.
My partner has been working very hard on their sobriety. After 5 months, we wanted to celebrate and thought this would be a great way to do it! Their menu has a variety of mocktails and non alcoholic beverages with a well curated menu. We were excited!
We ordered a non alcoholic beer and a cocktail. Cocktail was promising. The non alcoholic beer tasted so good I couldn't believe it was non alcoholic. What a great tone to set for the evening!
Until the waitress bring an empty cup and a non alcoholic beer can to our table... We were very confused about what was happening. So asked her what she was pouring. She explained they'd served the wrong beer... so that 'non alcoholic' beer that tasted so good I couldn't believe it was 'non alcoholic' was actually real beer? And my partner has their sobriety broken without so much as a proper explanation without being prompted.
I clarify with the server again, that the beer we'd already both had was in fact alcoholic. She asks if he's allergic and I say no, he's actually sober. Crickets. We sat there in stunned silence. The server is standing there awkwardly and asks us what we want to do. The couple sitting next to us overheard our conversation and in good faith point out to us that the menu has non alcoholic beverages. We share with them that that was in fact what we thought we'd ordered but were given an alcoholic drink instead. Both of them gasped. At least they understood how we felt because it did not seem that the severity of what otherwise would be a simple oversight did not seem to translate into this restaurant servers customer service acumen. She did not offer an apology or even to have her manager come speak to us. Without a path towards resolution, we got up to leave. The server did not make room for my partner to have enough space to comfortably move from their chair. As we left, she assured us she'd let her manager know. Unsure what we could do with that after the fact, however.
I hope this is read and can spread awareness about the importance of creating safe spaces for those trying to be sober to enjoy. This felt like so much taboo. I cannot fathom the kind of shame my partner must have felt to have his hard work taken from him in this way. I wish more people knew how hard it can be to be out in a word where sobriety is not the norm.
Can't say anything about the food since we didn't get to order. As great as the menu looked, we don't know how we can trust to be back here.
Parking is difficult in downtown so I recommend a ride share. Especially if there's a sharks game like this...
Read moreWe went here for my friend’s birthday and left satisfied and happy :) Food quality , ambience, service and location. The Pressroom checked every box!
Park at the parking garage on Market and San Pedro Square. That will give you 90 minutes of free parking. A quick 5-7 minutes walk will take you to the Pressroom, which is located just a block away from the parking garage.
Highly recommend you make a reservation beforehand too as the restaurant was pretty crowded even on a week night!
From the outside looking in, The Pressroom looks very chic with its huge wooden push door and an outdoor patio with cute black-and-white striped umbrellas. The inside gives an upscale and elevated vibes though! Floor-to-ceiling windows surround the corner restaurant with dark wood interiors and cute little booths. The bar is well stocked with varieties of alcohols and nicely decorated. I love that the restaurant is dimly lit which creates a nice ambiance for dining. There is cute fake plants decorations everywhere - between the booths, hanging from top of the windows, around the bar, etc. I whispered to my friend that w should come back here to enjoy brunch and see the restaurant in daylight. Our dinner reservation was at 7pm.
The front staff was super friendly, quickly checked us in and directed us to our table which pleased me instantly. I had requested a nice table because it was my friend’s birthday and they provided just that. We got a window table/booth which provided nice view of the patio and also the bar area. Our server promptly brought us water and kindly explained the menu to us.
We needed up ordering the Bread and Butter, Poke Nachos, and the Prime NY Steak Frites. We also picked the Pear Review and Byline Fizz for cocktails.
Food came out in reasonable amount of time. We enjoyed the house-made milk bread in the Bread and Butter. So soft and yummily melting in your mouth! The Poke Nachos was fresh and nicely seasoned.
I wasn’t impressed with the steak. Though it was pretty decent, nothing spectacular stood out to me.
Both of the cocktails served their purpose! My friend loves strawberry and her Byline Fizz was infused with all strawberries LOL which pleased her!
Overall, we had a great night with nice food, ambience and service! Best of all, we only paid $2 extra for parking LOL. We will definitely come back to try this restaurant’s...
