We tried several restaurants on our recent week long visit to Viejo San Juan. One of our very favorites was Cayo Caribe, and we had lunch there three times and dinner once. We don't eat meat, but we do eat seafood, so as you can imagine that can make for difficult choices in meat centric areas. One thing we were really missing after a few days was greens, and so we were very pleased to stop into Cayo Caribe for lunch. Very pleasant hosting and waitstaff seated us quickly and took our orders. The drinks arrived very quickly and wife had a Piña Colada and I a Margarita. Good, but perhaps not as good as Barrachina. We ordered salads with the Tuna. We were so glad as the salads were beautiful micro greens with seaweed salad spread over the top. Crowned with delicious toasted sesame encrusted Tuna fillet cooked to perfection! So delicious. We also split an order of the Fish Tacos. Beautiful pieces of Grouper lightly breaded and nestled in a crisp flour tortilla with slaw and spicy aioli dressing was delicious. I love food served piping hot and these were perfect and so tasty. Quite possibly the best Fish Taco we’ve ever had and we have had many. We couldn't stop thinking about them and returned the following day at lunchtime for Tuna salads and Shrimp Tacos. Salad was excellent and Tacos were very good, though not quite as good as the Fish Tacos. On our third visit, again at lunch, we double up on the Tacos with Fish and "Crazy Shrimp" tacos. Again, the Fish Tacos were perfect and the Crazy Shrimp Tacos were also excellent. The "Crazy" part involves the addition of succulent and creamy crabmeat atop the shrimp, and the effect was so tasty. Each meal was accompanied by drinks - good but not great - and we often had wine as well which was very good and very reasonably priced. Our final visit was on our last night in PR. Perhaps we visited Cayo Caribe too much, but it was so good. Dinner was underwhelming as we tried several other dishes including the prawns, and none of these matched the Fish/Shrimp Tacos or Tuna Salads. Despite this less than memorable dinner, 3 out of 4 is pretty solid. If you seek a great salad with Tuna or delicious Fish or Shrimp Tacos, Cayo Caribe is a very...
Read moreI used to work in a restaurant so I'm sympathetic to staff being busy. However, that was not the case here . We arrived at the restaurant about 5: 30 on a Thursday night. There were a few patrons there but not overly busy. In the outside dining area, in front of the restaurant I saw at least three waiters serving about 4 tables including ours. All of the outdoor tables are in full view table of the hostess. Throughout the 35 minutes we were there. The hostess was not overly busy so she would have had time to review how tables were being attended to by the waiters and waitresses. But She was young. We were given menus and ordered drinks and then the waitress disappeared for the next 35 minutes. Other tables around us had similar issues with servers disappearing. The others had to ask the hostess to bring the waiter/waitress out to pay their bill for example. Even then there was considerable delay with the waiter or waitress arriving. And no, I'm not an impatient person but we did not even see any signs of our waitress in that 35 minutes. So maybe her shift ended. We left cash on the table as an estimate of what we owed and we left I believe this is a training issue as well as possibly a supervisory issue that needs to be addressed. We ate dinner elsewhere. I want to stress the point that I I have worked in a restaurant myself. I have a pretty good eye for when a restaurant is adequately staffed and this restaurant appears to be adequately staffed. It begs many questions then as to...
Read moreWe went tonight to get dinner and we had the worst experience. We’ve got a call that our table was ready at 6:11 pm and we didn’t get the kids drink until after 6:50 pm. As soon as the server came in we ordered which was after waiting more than 30 minutes for her. After waiting over 50 minutes we asked for our bill since the kid were waiting for more than an hour at this point. The server said she was going to check on their food which she never did. When we finally asked for the check to pay just 2 passion fruit mojitos, then her a manager showed up with a ticket over $100 for our food that had never arrived. She said that it was only in the system for 22 minutes but never count all the time we waited. The manager never came to apologize or to fix the issue. All she wanted was to ticket paid in full because the food was only in the system for 22 minutes. We refused to pay that since we never got our food. You can tell she was never a manager, she didn’t even care for the customer but one thing she wanted is the money. No even asked what happened. All she did was approached with the ticket. Beside the manager checked on any table to see if anyone was taken care of nor if anything needed something but she made sure to show up when the money was needed instead of the attention of the customer. I do not even want to call her a manager since she does not even know what is that mean. Very disappointed since it was one of our favorite place to visit while we came to visit Puerto...
