🍞 🥮 🥖 Why should you eat here??? Because finally, Viejo San Juan has a place for consistently delicious homemade pastries breads savory quiche and top-quality sandwiches! This locally owned and operated spot is like a mini- Panaderia, with Spanish/Caribbean/French/Italian influences, it opens at 8:30AM sharp, weekdays only. And it’s goooood. With many cafes/restaurants to choose from in VSJ, local employees from La Fortaleza aka the Governors Mansion 🇵🇷 pick this as one of their favorites. Enjoy their breakfast sandwiches and platters 🍳 come for lunch 🥗 or an early afternoon break ☕️ 🥤 🍷 this is a hidden and well air-conditioned hideaway, ❄️ beat the heat here. Upscale in its quality but easygoing in its atmosphere, 😎 disposable containers and utensils are the norm — but don’t be deterred, their menu items are winners! Though perhaps it’s not the “greenest” practice - you may notice it’s the practical route for many small businesses throughout the island, for now.🌴 Spiga has 9 tables inside (which they’ll configure to accommodate your group) 2 tables outside and an eat-in counter ⚡️ — great for solo foodies/travelers to enjoy their delicious food. Even with kids who are picky eaters or your abuela (grandma) who knows what she likes and doesn’t like everyone will leave satisfied.. Everything is fresh and offered at a reasonable price 💰 .
⭐️ Lunch & Refreshments: It’s uncommon to find 🔎 lunchtime sandwiches like the ones offered here in Viejo San Juan 💙 (available from 11:30AM until closing) - with ingredients like Smoked Salmon, Goat Cheese, Brie Cheese, Pesto, Caprese Style with Mozzarella & Tomato, Prosciutto and such. Plus they offer fresh Salads too. ⭐️ Fresh Pasta is featured everyday - both a meaty and meatless version. 🇮🇹🤸🏽♂️. Note: ⭐️ Every Tuesday & Friday Spiga features homemade sourdough pizzas 🇮🇹🤸🏽♂️ Every Thursday - homemade Lasagna! 🇮🇹🤸🏽♂️
⭐️ Beverages & Cookies & Pairings: Absolutely wash down your meal with a glass or two of Cava 🥂 - the sparkling wine from Catalan 🇪🇸 once known as the “Spanish Champagne” before that term itself became illegal 😳 , a glass of red wine 🍷 (which would pair well with their prosciutto sandwiches) or local Kombucha, Craft Beer 🍺 or sodas 🥤 I enjoyed a glass of Cava 🍾 paired with their Caprese style sandwich 💕 and on another visit I enjoyed 2 slices of quiche (I like to mine at room temperature), with a Mimosa 🍊 and a cold Coca-Cola para llevar/to go. Spiga bakes some of the most delicious chocolate chip cookies 🍪 🍪 🍪 , order some to go! They’re good for your hike back to the office or your hike up to El Morro!
🗺 Finding It: Spiga is located on Calle San Justo near Calle Tétuan. Not far from the back of the “Banco Popular” building (ask anyone and refer to that if you should get lost) and the chic tropical clothing shop known as Pure Soul. If the Spanish language isn’t in your skill set, no problems here. Have yourself an authentic local experience! No chain restaurants for you! Open weekdays at 8:30AM until 3:30PM (kitchen closes at 3PM) . Closed on the weekends. !Buen Provecho! (bwayne pro vay cho) as they say to all dining in Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 ¡Enjoy your portion/meal! 🌴
🏆 P.S. Be sure to say hola to Alexis 👋🏽 , a great guy you may encounter up front , he’s glad to accommodate all size groups (I’d suggest calling in advance for groups of 7, if possible). I found him to be extremely helpful regarding weekly specials, he’s an enthusiastic member of “Team Spiga” and he obviously loves what he does! ...
Read moreWe were really excited to try out Spiga given the reviews. Unfortunately, the rude waitress and wrong order today completely ruined the experience. We saw the amazing pastries on display and asked if she can explain which was which (there’s no label or numbering). She first points from far away and mumbles the flavors. We obviously could not differentiate (it was about 4 feet away). She got annoyed when we asked again, so we stood up to point and ask her specifically. When the first order came out, it was completely wrong. When we asked her about it, she replies “if it’s on the table then we are not changing anything.” Even if it’s her mistake! We then asked to see the check to make sure. When she pulled it up, it was clear she was wrong. She looked unhappy, grabbed new pastries and threw it on our table. The new order was also wrong. We gave up and didn’t want to fight it anymore. Just really surprised by her lack of desire to help us.
Wow! I've not seen such a passive aggressive response. Honestly, an apology would have been enough and I would just delete this. But blaming the customer for bad service (several people at our table heard what she said, which was not that we touched the pastries. We clearly did not since we immediately realized the mistake) and bad energy is really something else. O well, thankfully, the rest of PR has amazing people and sunshine. I just hope Spiga improves from this experience for the sake of others since there were positives (like the...
Read moreWe just ate lunch at Spiga . We wanted to taste a few things, but felt very limited because we had super early dinner reservations. But all the people around us were eating different foods, all of which looked yummy. So...we ate too much, but had no regrets. While ordering we realized that we lucked out by having this particular woman take our order. She was as helpful as she was nice. Her name is Katia B...not to be confused with Katia S. Katia S was just as nice and very helpful— even gave us some advice as to where we should walk to see some sights. But I know you’re reading this to find out more about the food they serve. We had potato soup which sounds boring, but was scrumptious! We had a delicious pasta (made there!) coated with vegetarian pesto sauce and that was so good that we wanted bread to scoop up any remaining pesto sauce left in the bowl. That’s when we discovered they made the one of the best breads we ever had! Their bakery is on the second level and it has a glass wall, so you can see it! Oh, and the salad was so good that my husband almost forgot to leave me any! Anyway, I hardly ever write reviews, but the food and the 2 Katrias were special. So was the cappuccino! Go very early or very late to whatever meal you’re going for. Otherwise, you may have to wait a bit....
