Black Sheep Bar & Grill — Restaurant in San Luis Obispo

Latest update from January 2022: We gave Black Sheep another try last week and it seems like it’s back to it’s old self. Two staff members behind the bar who were responsive and interesting in being helpful and it didn’t shut down strangely early. I’m moving my rating back up to four stars and would recommend this place if things stay stable.

Old Review from around June 2021: This used to be our regular Monday night before the pandemic and it was always a great place to get a pint and hang out with friends. Tonight was a different story. We waited over ten minutes at the not busy bar to get a basic beer order in for our first round while the bartender talked to his friends and slowly unloaded a dishwasher before helping us. Then at a little before nine the bartender said it was last call and immediately went outside to put away the chairs and umbrellas before taking any orders. When he came back in fifteen minutes later he said it was too late to order anything else. He gave us attitude like we were asking for something unreasonable. It’s clear he had no interest in helping customers and just wanted to get out of there. We cleared out and had a couple more pints with the super welcoming staff over at Barrel House where it was clear they wanted our business. Looks like until Nlack Sheep gets some better staff who act like they want customers there it’ll be off our list.

UPDATE around January 2022: it doesn’t look like there’s a way to reply to the owner’s response so I’ll comment here. To be clear, there were no other staff members to to talk and let know what we needed as the other person working behind the bar was also initially ignoring us and when the bar tender went outside she disappeared too. Honestly I chalk this whole situation up to service industry workers who are burned out from all the challenges of COVID. It’s been almost six months so I think we’ll give it another try and see if it’s recovered to it’s old level of service. We like Black Sheep and want it to be successful but based on that last experience couldn’t recommend it to others...

This is a great American-style bar restaurant with an outside patio area.

The atmosphere creates a sporty and casual feeling.

My family is a big fan of burgers and sandwiches. Everyone is satisfied with the food here. Except for the size of my six pieces of shrimp. It looked smaller than in the actual picture. My picture looks better than real life.

We always come here for dinner and sit in the patio area. However, our latest lunch experience was a little bit disappointing.

We came around 11:30 am. It was not a full house until noon. Then all the tables were taken. There were two chefs in the kitchen and one server taking care of the drinks, orders, the cashier, and serving food.

So it was super slow so the four guys who were seated in front of the bar left.

We could tell that the three ladies who came 10 minutes after us and sat at the bar also had to wait a very long time to get their food.

We came at 11:37am. At 11:53 am we got our drinks. At 12:13 pm we got our meal. After I finished my six pieces of sautéed shrimp, I waited for half an hour to get my ice cream at 12:45pm. And it was melted when it finally came. Therefore, I don’t recommend coming to this restaurant at lunchtime if they are...

Do not go to this place for its bar. Physically abusive, rude staff.

Went to this bar last night and while i was standing by the bar waiting for a drink an employee came out from behind the bar and bumped into a college kid with his girlfriend. After turning to face the employee and asking "what?" the employee then shoved the kid hard enough to knock him over. His girlfriend who was standing next to him then asked as i think most people would "what the hell?" the employee then proceeded to SHOVE THE GIRL TWICE, the second time hard enough to cause her to fall over backwards over the bar that was situated a few feet behind her. Granted the bar was busy but the staff and the employee made no attempts to reconcile.

The next day i called to ask to speak to a manager, i was told "we don't have a manager" big surprise... but i was told i would receive a call back from the owner later. Later that day i was called, but by the employee who had shoved the girl, he told me he was sorry AND THAT HE HAD BEEN DRUNK, but then proceeded to CUSS ME OUT after learning i didn't know the girl.

There are plenty of bars in san luis, ones that don't hit women, called me old fashioned but i find this...
